As a child, Katherine Johnson loved to count. She counted the steps on the road, the number of stars in the sky, the number of dishes and spoons she washed in the kitchen sink. Boundless, curious, and excited by calculations, young Katherine longed to know as much as she could about math, about the universe. From Katherine's early beginnings as a gifted student to her heroic accomplishments as a prominent mathematician at NASA, this is the story of a ground-breaking American icon who not only calculated the course of moon landings but, in turn, saved lives. In "Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13", we are on a wild journey with a african-american mathematician who worked for NASA. We have all heard of the Apollo 13, but did you ever know about the mathematical genius who made sure that that mission returned home? Katherine as a young child loved to count, she seemed to counted evreything in her path. From Katherine's younger years, she was a overall gifted students and later on that lead her to some huge heroic accomplishments. After introducing this picture book to the class, they will soon be able to pick up some history about a science topic as well as learning the concept on counting a variety of items, and as well as learning about a groundbreaking woman along the way. They can also contuine to watch the film "Hidden Figures". This picture book tells the story of Katherine Johnson and how she landed a job at NASA as a mathematician to help the Apollo 13 mission during the Space Race. This story illustrates math as she solves the math to make sure that Apollo mission goes smoothly, and because of that she makes a historical impact on U.S Spacecraft advancement. This story could be used in science, math, and history classrooms to show how these content areas are prevalent in our day to day lives! ( )

This is an inspiring book written by Helaine Becker about the mathematical wiz, Katherine Johnson. Becker does a wonderful job of highlighting events from Katherine's life that helped to shape her and lead her to NASA. I think students would be fascinated to learn about how Katherine skipped grades and had very impressive mathematical abilities. It is also inspiring to learn how she didn't give up even when things got tough. I also think many students enjoy learning about space and this would be a fun story to read and get them to think about how they could go to space themselves one day! I like the reoccurring "you can count on me" that Katherine says to those asking her to continue to work hard. It is a great example of perseverance!

Katherine Johnson was a bright student - so bright, she skipped three grades (past her brother) and was ready for high school by age ten. However, in the family's West Virginia town, there wasn't a high school for Black students, so they moved one town over so Katherine could continue her education. She became a school teacher, then joined NASA and worked on Apollo 11, 12, and 13. Her swift, accurate calculations helped Apollo 13 "slingshot" around the moon and return safely to Earth.
