Book review of "Rhymes with Fool," by Jim Courter.I received a free copy of this book through Library Thing in exchange for an honest review. This book's story line begins with a private detective's, Barry Pool's, search for Eric, a missing college student. Pool's preliminary investigation confirms that Eric likely has moved to rural northern Wisconsin and is staying with his birth mother in a right-wing compound operated by Eric's grandfather. In further investigating, Pool learns that Eric has been "programmed" by one or more of the right-wingers to commit crimes. The story line then shifts and focuses on Pool's efforts to prevent future crimes, and ends with Pool dispensing vigilante justice on one of the right-wingers. Pool's motivation to act as a crusader seeking to prevent future crimes is never spelled out, and Pool's dispensing of vigilante justice is entirely out-of-character. Other characters in the book include a bookish researcher named Jill, a runaway teenager named Lisa, and an undergraduate college student named Nancy, each of which also has out-of-character quirks--Jill is very forward in seeking a sexual relationship with Pool, Lisa likes to work crossword puzzles, and Nancy speaks and acts far beyond her age and level of education. Two stars. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . Investigative journalist turned private eye Barry Pool takes on the case of a missing college student that leads to to white supremacists and a possible plot to create a racial incident huge enough to spark a race war.Barry is a dogged investigator with a solid moral code who continues the case even after the young man reappears and his employer considers the matter closed. Some of the other characters are a little stock, especially the ultimate villain. Just by description you know he's up to no good. The ending is both expected and unexpected. Would not mind reading further in this series. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . This was a nice read that kept me trying to figure out what was going to happen next. As a former investigative journalist, Milwaukee private eye Barry Pool is more adept at crafting sentences than at handling a gun. So when he's asked to find the missing son of a prominent U.S. Senate candidate, he isn't sure he wants to face the serious danger the job might entail, even though it would pay him more money than he has made since switching careers. He takes the job, accepting the risk for the sake of the money. But after uncovering a murderous neo-Nazi conspiracy and being drawn into a volatile mix of urban racial tension and high-stakes politics, he wonders if he'll live to spend it. I would have liked to see Rhymes with Fool be a full length well developed read and often found myself thinking it was a great start to a full length book. The characters, although underdeveloped, were relatedtable and real, the pace was good and the plot not outstanding but still captivating. ( )
