"A brilliant new work of suspense from "the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years." (Washington Post) From the writer who "inspires cultic devotion in readers" (The New Yorker) and has been called "incandescent" by Stephen King, "absolutely mesmerizing" by Gillian Flynn, and "unputdownable" (People), comes a gripping new novel that turns a crime story inside out. Toby is a happy-go-lucky charmer who's dodged a scrape at work and is celebrating with friends when the night takes a turn that will change his life - he surprises two burglars who beat him and leave him for dead. Struggling to recover from his injuries, beginning to understand that he might never be the same man again, he takes refuge at his family's ancestral home to care for his dying uncle Hugo. Then a skull is found in the trunk of an elm tree in the garden - and as detectives close in, Toby is forced to face the possibility that his past may not be what he has always believed. A spellbinding standalone from one of the best suspense writers working today, The Witch Elm asks what we become, and what we're capable of, when we no longer know who we are"--… (més)

this one gets bogged down a lot. and it gets all too entangled with its unreliable narrator. ( )

This book had a very good story. I felt it just took way too long to tell it. ( )

A rather good novel about young folks in an extended contemporary Dublin middle-class family, who find a mysterious death from ten years ago coming back to haunt them. The somewhat clueless narrator is very well portrayed; as a straight man, he is oblivious to the challenges faced by his two cousins, one gay and one a mother of two, and only gradually develops a clue. It's weird to realise that Gen Z have always been deep into social media as part of their world. The end did not quite work for me, but the rest did; and Dublin as a place is very well observed. ( )

Ehhh. Damning the latest book from one of my very favorite authors with faint praise. First of all, French is incapable of less-than-good writing. The Witch Elm is very well written and I enjoyed it. It's just that this one suffers in comparison to some of her other books, specifically In the Woods, Faithful Place, and Broken Harbour. Those books, I literally couldn't put down, and their impact was devastating. This one, I could put down. For a couple weeks, at one point. Which is unprecedented for a French novel. Now, I did come back of course. I could use the holiday craziness as an excuse. But the effect overall was: "Okay, that was pretty good." Shoulder shrug. On to the next book. Which I'm not used to from this author.

Even the flawed The Likeness with its ludicrous premise that I just couldn't buy into, was memorable. It's not about the shift in focus from detectives to ordinary citizens/victims/possible perps. That was an intriguing change of pace actually. It's just the book was a bit flabby if I'm honest. There was one particular subplot that was entirely superfluous. Conversations went on and on and on. And on. And I just didn't quite buy the final machinations of the plot.

Plenty of people seem to think that French is too wordy, you see that type of sentiment all the time in negative reviews of her books, and I fracking HATE that with a passion - the fact that she takes the time to dig deep into the character's psyches, and describes people, places and events so vividly instead of rushing hurriedly through the plot mechanics, is a unique gift she bestows on the crime genre. However in this case, unlike any of her past novels, such criticism is not entirely unwarranted. ( )
