Madness engulfs an oil platform A remote deep-sea oil drill blows apart, pushing the cash-strapped energy company that owns it toward bankruptcy. Madness and murder engulf the oil platform. A probe shows intelligent life on the deepest sea floor, evolved from long-lived cephalopods to whom the oil is sacred. Though peaceful, they will defend the oil at all costs. Alerted to the intentions of previously unknown humans the undersea intelligence is pushed toward a conflict that could destroy both civilizations.… (més)

This was a good book. It definitely kept me interested and engaged even though some of the concepts took some getting used to. This book will appeal to anyone who is interested in fantastic life forms.

*I received a copy of this book for free. The review is my own, honest and unsolicited. ( )

I was very impressed with the authors refreshing story line. This was a first for me reading about not just aliens, but our own aliens living in the seas. As I was reading the story I could picture it as a movie in my own thoughts which made it an easy read. I would recommend this book to all alien lovers but also for those who need a change in genre. This action-packed story has it all: first contact with another sentient species, skirmish with said species, government cover-up because, well, oil is involved and that rules all. What it doesn't have is more pages: a relationship between two of the main human characters went from "nice to meet you" to "let's make lots of babies" in no time at all. Protagonists came and went too quickly and suffered from underdevelopment. The back story for the aliens was very well done and hopefully forms the basis for additional stories. The aliens themselves could have used a little more character development as well -- we got to know two of them well enough, but it's hard to say how representative they are of the species.

That aside, the story is compelling -- the chain of events and actions of peripheral characters who don't have a complete picture of what's going on are spot-on plausible. There were probably a few more dots that could be connected in a longer story (a World War 3 scenario would be nearly inevitable given the state of affairs at the end of the story); hopefully the abrupt ending is an indication of more to come. Dark Sea Rising is a book about first contact with intelligent beings not from outer space but from our own planet. It was interesting to get viewpoints from both the intelligent cephalopods and the humans. You learn how the miscommunication between the two species can cause conflict and misunderstandings.

I do wish the bad guys were a little less cliché in their evilness.

Overall, it was an easy and entertaining read. ( )

above and below - An exciting concept relating to identifying the chapters. Above is in our world. Below is in their world Although I am a science fiction fan, I am interested in outer space and the science fiction contained therein. I selected this book because of the science fiction that occurs in the ocean. Few, if any, of my books, relate to unknown cephalopods living in the benthos region. It took me a while to engage the idea of intelligent cephalopods, including family and fry, in a deep ocean environment. Living in Florida, the gulf and ocean contain known species of life. My latest sea/ocean item of interest includes "release the Kraken" which includes an unknown species of cephalopod, or very nasty octopi. Once I became acclimatized to the cephalopods, the story, above and below the water, went well indeed. The story was well written, and the descriptions of the known
cephalopods, as applied to the unknown cephalopods, were very accurate. It is my understanding that 71% of the earth contains oceans, most unexplored. There may come a time when we find out there is more in the seas/
oceans than we may be aware of. Greg Kornacki ( )
