From debut author Janae Marks comes a captivating story full of heart, as one courageous girl questions assumptions, searches for the truth, and does what she believes is right??even in the face of great opposition.

Zoe Washington isn't sure what to write. What does a girl say to the father she's never met, hadn't heard from until his letter arrived on her twelfth birthday, and who's been in prison for a terrible crime?

A crime he says he never committed.

Could Marcus really be innocent? Zoe is determined to uncover the truth. Even if it means hiding his letters and her investigation from the rest of her family. Everyone else thinks Zoe's worrying about doing a good job at her bakery internship and proving to her parents that she's worthy of auditioning for Food Network's Kids Bake Challenge.

But with bakery confections on one part of her mind, and Marcus's conviction weighing heavily on the other, this is one recipe Zoe doesn't know how to balance. The only thing she knows to be true: Everyone lies.

"When Marcus tells Zoe he is innocent, and her grandmother agrees, Zoe begins to learn about inequality in the criminal justice system, and she sets out to find the alibi witness who can prove his innocence." (Publishers Weekly, "An Anti-Racist Children's and YA Reading List")

Book balances cozy topics like baking with harder ones like wrongful incarceration and racism in an engaging, gentle way. ( )

Zoe Washington is pretty naive about the criminal justice system. She believes everyone in prison is guilty, including her father. He was incarcerated before Zoe was born so she has never interacted with him at all. Her life is full and happy; she likes baking and hanging out with friends. It’s not until she unexpectedly comes into contact with him that she starts to feel the absence of her biological dad.

This story will be very approachable for most kids, even though it’s about a heavy topic, namely the failings of our criminal justice system. (There is discussion of a murder which could be intense for some young readers.) Overall I was impressed by the engaging writing and how the plot unfolded.

Mild spoiler:

It’s all neatly done, ending with reassurances that feel a little too good to be true, but fit within the tradition of kid heroes and happy endings in children’s literature. ( )

Such a delightful read. Curious and inquisitive Zoe Washington is obsessed with baking and figuring out whether or not her father really did committ a major crime. This book is part Food Network drama, part investigation and soul searching. Multi-layered, as a good book should be.

This was ALMOST a five start book for me.

Almost.

So much was going for it. It was the story of Zoe, who adores baking (and wants to enter a baking competition show) and has an internship at a bakery. She has gotten a letter from her biological father, who is in prison.....and telling no one, Zoe reaches out and writes him back. Thus begins a journey into determining if her biological father really belonged in jail (he claims his innocence) and what has she been missing out on?

I was impressed with the writing of this debut novel and Zoe was a delightful character. Her friendship up and downs is something every twelve year old can relate to.

But then the book wraps up too quickly in a perfect bow. Yes, the writing was on the wall: Zoe's dad was innocent; the Innocence Project helped make that discovery known. Everything felt too fast. One chapter Zoe is getting in trouble for going behind her family's back and then the next was "Mom is cool with me looking into him....now I am visiting him in prison....now he is out." I wanted more "authenticity" than that.

Still, I am looking forward to seeing more offerings from this author. ( )

This is one of my new favorite books! Zoe's character is so realistic, and her family and friends are too. Zoe's mom wants what is best for her, but so does her Grandmother, and they definitely don't agree on what is best. As Zoe confronted some huge mistakes the adults in her life made, I couldn't put this book down. This would be great for fans of Zebra Forest, and will have wide appeal to any fans of realistic fiction. ( )
