The bestselling masters of the American West add a deadly new twist to the epic saga of U.S. Marshal Will Tanner. This time, the hunter becomes the hunted . . . He's the most notorious cattle rustler in all of Texas. His name-Jebediah Cotton-strikes fear into the hearts of every rancher in the territory. So it's more than a little strange that someone would shoot Cotton's youngest son in the back. Whoever did it is either a coward, a fool, or a crazy man. Whoever did it must die. Even if he's a U.S. deputy marshal named Will Tanner . . . So begins not one, but two of the deadliest manhunts in frontier history. As Will Tanner sets off into Oklahoma Territory in pursuit of godless bank robber named Parson McCoy, Jebediah Cotton sends his five remaining sons and cold-blooded brother-in-law after him. Will has no idea he's being stalked. But when there are this many players in the game, a U.S. deputy marshal has two choices: kill them all or die trying . . . The Will Tanner U.S. Marshal series has the following titles: Will Tanner: U.S. Deputy Marshal, A Stranger in Town, Powder Burn, Evil Never Sleeps, and Dig Your Own Grave. In Evil Never Sleeps, there are some nefarious men Tanner is called upon to ride after and bring back to the judge at Fort Smith. The toughest one is named Preacher McCoy who headed a gang of murderous thieves. Now he is on his way back to face justice. Will he arrive alive?
Will Tanner brooks no argument from his prisoners and treats them right unless they make a break for the rough country. Preacher is a mean man who just takes advantage of everybody, including his gang. Preacher and Will tangle and wrestle toward the end of the book even though Will is trying go heal from being shot in the back! Before that comes to a head, Will is entangled with a family out for revenge and a fight with a former deputy who seems brutal.
I enjoyed seeing Will Tanner face off with some of the vilest men of the west in this fictional tale. He is polite, young, and prefers working alone when bringing prisoners in though he can work with others if the job is a big one. Will is thinking about the boarding house owner’s daughter, Sophie, who he believes just might be worth pursuing. She is a young woman who helps her mother run a boarding house and can’t help falling for Will, but she has given him an ultimatum with a promise. Readers of western tales will enjoy the wild and crazy adventure that Will goes on more than once in the book. There are some helpful characters who befriend Will and aid him in running to ground the men he is after, and there are some who wish Will would just turn around and go home.
While each book in the series is a stand-alone story, readers, like me, might enjoy reading the books in order to see how the main protagonist develops. I wasn’t disappointed as I read each book, getting lost in the old west where there is a mixture of romance and gun smoke in the air! Enjoy them all!
