The book “ Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race” by Margot Lee Shetterly is a picture book thats based one a true story about 4 black women who helped NASA launch men into space. This event was happening during the space race and the fight for civil rights. The intended audience 10 years old and up. This book is a phenomenal choice for a science classroom. Hidden figures follow several influential figures who worked at different organizations and helped change history as we know it. It follows the path of history, and how they shaped it in aeronautical innovation. I think this is perfect for students who feel as though learning doesn't make a difference! Goodreads Review: Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at math...really good. They participated in some of NASA's greatest successes, like providing the calculations for America's first journeys into space. And they did so during a time when being black and a woman limited what they could do. But they worked hard. They persisted. And they used their genius minds to change the world. In this illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as "colored computers," and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career. Hidden figures has exploded as a movie and should be celebrated and read within the classrooms as well. I offered to different versions of this book to suit all the kinds of readers in my classes. As well as, to allow my students to gain a visual of these wonderful women in history and all that they did. Hidden figures is based off of four African American women who faced racial discrimination while working at NASA. These women has extensive STEM backgrounds and careers but were belittled, mistrusted and degraded by their peers during their careers and efforts at NASA. Regardless, they worked as computers at NASA, solving problems for the engineers and rising above and beyond their jobs to help solved issues at NASA. This is a fantastic book to read in class, because it discusses and surrounds so many issues within one story. Racial discrimination, job discrimination, treatment of others, courage, hope, women in STEM, black women in STEM, NASA, advancement, making a difference, and so forth.
