"When Jessica Farris signs up for a psychology study conducted by the mysterious Dr. Shields, she thinks all she'll have to do is answer a few questions, collect her money, and leave. But as the questions grow more and more intense and invasive and the sessions become outings where Jess is told what to wear and how to act, she begins to feel as though Dr. Shields may know what she's thinking...and what she's hiding."--… (més)

The beginning and the end don’t quite work for me but the middle is great and it’s a quick read. Dr. Shields is definitely no Amy Dunne but she’s a fun character. ( )

I was a big fan of the author’s first collaboration “The Wife Between Us”, and was looking forward to their new novel. While this book is certainly intriguing, it just didn’t come quite as close to their first hit.⁣
The premise for this story is unique and original, but as the chapters wore on I started to become impatient for more of the plot to develop. Overall the narrative fell flat, even when secrets and motives were being revealed. Everything is building towards a big crescendo, but it takes its time arriving there. This is the kind of book that you expect a “big twist” towards the end, but surprisingly that never happened. The more I read, the more I saw how implausible the story was. I kept shouting at the protagonist to tell someone in an authority status about what was happening, but she always had a reason for not doing so. I felt the same way about the ending. After reading about a certain character’s misdeeds, I was expecting a much different ending than the one we were given, and therefore I personally didn’t find it satisfactory. ⁣
The characters were developed well, but they weren’t ones that I felt left a lasting impression. I also felt that the descriptions were uneven between the two main characters, Jessica and Dr. Shields. So much was revealed about Jessica and her past, while we only got little glimpses into Dr. Shields, and I still felt it wasn’t enough. She behaves a certain way and I could never find the link to her reasoning behind her actions. ( )

This was a complete and total mindf*ck. I couldn't make heads or tails of who was the "good guy" and who was the "bad guy," which means the authors totally did their job and did it well. However, because of the manipulation and feeling uncomfortable the entire time, I had a hard time giving this any higher than 3 star rating. It's a good book, it was a little overwhelming to me though but that's 100% on me. Defintely worth a pick-up if you can stomach master manipulators and feeling uncomfortable during a read.

*I received this book in exchange for a review. My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for continuing to fuel my book habit. ( )

This psychological thriller was a real barn-burner, a nearly perfect read. Like a lot of books, however, the ending was handled too abruptly, and that cost it half a star on the rating. Definitely recommend if you like this type of book. ( )

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy.
Amazing! I loved The Wife Between Us and this was just as good, if not better. So hard to put down, but unfortunately the holidays interfered!

So you sign up for a study thinking you’ll answer a few questions and make some money. The next thing you know you feel your life is being controlled and manipulated and everything feels like it’s out of your hands.
As the questions become more intense, you feel less in control. You also feel that your doctor may be reading your mind and might also know all your deep, dark secrets. You suddenly don’t know who you can trust and you have no clue what is real and what is the result of this study. But maybe you’re just being paranoid? What did you really sign up to do...or let them do to you?

This is definitely one of my top five favorite books. I was blown away by the twists numerous times. I found myself thinking about these characters even when I wasn’t reading. I really was just “wowed”!
