Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor upset by the complacency of the German church toward the suffering around it, forms a breakaway church to speak out against the established political and religious authorities. When the Nazis outlaw the church, he escapes as a fugitive. Great graphic presentation with only a few places where text was difficult to read due to color palette choices (red on black a tough read). Amazing bio work here. ( )

I learned quite a bit, and I really enjoyed the layout of this book. It also feels particularly important and scary to read right now in relation to American politics. That said, it wasn't quite a page turner for me. I kept putting it down and not feeling particularly excited to pick it up again, so it took me a while to get through it. ( )

How the young German theologian and pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer resisted the takeover of his country by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party. How he struggled with duty to his country versus duty to God, and then wondered if it was ever right for a Christian to kill another person. His decisions ultimately led him to become involved, as a member of the German intelligence service, in the plot to assassinate Hitler, for which he was executed. Parallel to Bonhoeffer’s story, Hendrix illustrates the rise and ultimate defeat of fascism in Germany in a clear and accessible fashion with prose and cartoons. ( )

At first glance this sort of looks like a graphic novel, but it is really a hand-lettered history book that makes elaborate use of graphic design, spot illustrations, and a color scheme straight off the Miami Dolphins website. So much text! And it switches randomly from all-caps to mixed-case between pages and on the same page.

Ostensibly, the book is about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a theologian and minister who was willing to oppose Hitler in a German resistance movement and die for his beliefs, but who really didn't accomplish much of anything in the end. To fill out the book, Hendrix basically recounts the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler in abundant detail, drawing attention to just how minimal Bonhoeffer's impact was in the larger picture.

The tone of the writing tells me this book is targeted at young readers, but I cannot imagine them trudging through all the words despite the draw of the art. ( )

a J graphic novel but would need to be read by older kid or adult. I found the art a major addition to the text and fully absorbed each page. Was anxious to turn each page to feel the energy of the drawing.
Illustrated page by page not frame by frame. Good intro to graphic novel genre.
