When Olivia Shaw's mother dies, the sophisticated food editor is astonished to learn she's inherited a centuries-old English estate--and a title to go with it. Raw with grief and reeling from the knowledge that her reserved mother hid something so momentous, Olivia leaves San Francisco and crosses the pond to unravel the mystery of a lifetime. One glance at the breathtaking Rosemere Priory and Olivia understands why the manor, magnificent even in disrepair, was the subject of her mother's exquisite paintings. What she doesn't understand is why her mother never mentioned it to her. As Olivia begins digging into her mother's past, she discovers that the peeling wallpaper, debris-laden halls, and ceiling-high Elizabethan windows covered in lush green vines hide unimaginable secrets. Although personal problems and her life back home beckon, Olivia finds herself falling for the charming English village and its residents. But before she can decide what Rosemere's and her own future hold, Olivia must first untangle the secrets of her past.… (més)

Sweet and easy to read, yet improbable, silly, and definitely not my usual type of book ( )

The Art of Inheriting Secrets is a fast paced fun mystery. Olivia is an almost 40 year old editor and writer for a food magazine in San Francisco, who up until a few months earlier had a good life with her artist boyfriend and her dog. Then she had an accident and had to move in with her artist mother, who was sick and then passed away. Her English mother had secrets; they are big secrets starting with the fact that she was an heiress to a large estate called Rosemere Priory, like Downton Abbey only in ruins, and her daughter is now Lady Olivia. Olivia has to sell her moms house in San Francisco, and figure out if the estate can be saved or if she can even afford to restore it or even if she wants to take on this project. Then there is the mystery of who her family was, missing persons, and if the place is haunted. It’s like she walked into the middle of a movie and has to figure everything out without seeing the beginning. Luckily she is befriended by an a family from India whose grandmothers were childhood friends. Great characters, intriguing English countryside setting, and food are this stories pluses. When I read the last page I wanted a sequel or at least a movie! Although this is more of a mystery than romance novel I need to caution you that there is some sexual content. ( )

I was invested in this novel from the start. I loved the art references, the descriptions of all the sumptuous food, the beautiful setting, the restoring of a dilapidated Elizabethan mansion and the secrets it held, and the treasure hunt Olivia's mother planned for her after death. The characters were varied and likeable, and I adored Pavi, who became such a close friend to Olivia. Olivia, herself, was intelligent, self-deprecating and funny. I was pulled in by her journey of self-discovery and felt all her ups and downs as she navigated a new life after her mother's death. I walked beside Olivia as she she explored the ruins of Rosemere with its decaying rooms, rose gardens, conservatory and beautiful countryside, and the descriptions of the quaint English village, the food, the rain and the sun made me feel as though I was actually there. "The Art of Inheriting Secrets" really was a sensory feast.

However, I did have a few complaints with the novel. For one, while I thought Samir was perfect for Olivia, their romance happened too quickly and too easily. I also felt the ending was rushed and there were loose ends that needed explaining. I would also have liked more information about the restoration of Rosemere Priory, rather than a focus on the growing attraction between Olivia and Samir. However, overall, "The Art of Inheriting Secrets" was a pleasure to read and I will be looking for other novels by this author. ( )
