You know that old adage about war being "months of boredom punctuated by moments of extreme terror"? That seems to be the overall feel Trelease was going for in Enchantée. Pages and pages of maudlin reminiscences on How Life Used To Be and sulky resentment of Those Terrible Aristocrats are interrupted by beatings from her drunkard of a brother, desperate attempts to raise the rent money, and threats of inevitable exposure as a Faux Baroness. I wish I could say the worldbuilding or relationships offered compensation, but these progress so S L O W L Y that they rather contribute to than provide respite from the rampant boredom. There might be a good story buried in here somewhere, but I don't have the patience—or the blood pressure—to keep digging for it. ( )

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Enchantee duology. I borrowed this audiobook from the library to listen to.

Audiobook Quality (4/5): The narration for this book was easy to listen to and well done.

Thoughts: I stopped reading this about 60% of the way through. The author does a decent job of trying to incorporate magic into French culture right before the French Revolution (think Marie Antoinette in power). That portion of the story is intriguing and the idea that some people are trying to develop airships is also intriguing; unfortunately, the rest of this is just outright boring.

Our main protagonist, Camille, is trying to make a living to help her and her sister survive in Paris. She decides to use her magic while gambling at Versailles to do this. How could that possibly go wrong? And in traditional style, even when she has enough, she keeps going.

It was a dull storyline and moved so incredibly slow that I just didn't care at all. It is a long book and at even half way through it felt like I had been listening to it forever. I didn't care about any of the characters and kept hoping something (even something bad) would happen just to make things interesting.

My Summary (3/5): Overall I thought this sounded amazing and did like some of the magic and inventions going on in this world. However, it ended up being so incredibly dull that I just couldn't pay attention. I very rarely DNF audiobooks but this was one I just couldn't stomach listening to anymore. ( )

Really liking this - and loving Lazare - but setting this aside for now and coming back to it when I have more time.

I am a person that will try different genres when I read. I also know that there are genres that I will consume differently. That is why I picked up."Enchantée" both as hardcopy and audiobook. The audiobook was through the library with the Libby app.
Enchantée is historical fiction with magical realism.
"Enchantée" is an exploration of desperation, identity, and just how far we are prepared to go to get what we think we deserve. But it's also a romantic love story between two people who don't quite fit on either side of the societal divide.
Trelease renders all with beautiful prose. The detail and the danger of a world in turmoil is apparent on every page. Threading magic throughout somehow makes perfect sense and creates a web of possibility and threat that tightens and compels. I was holding my breath! And the ending was deeply satisfying.
I am looking forward to reading the second installment of the series that comes in 2021. ( )
