"Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go-Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it's the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she's twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Another band getting noticed is The Six, led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she's pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend. The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice"--… (més)

This book is a great road trip audio book especially if you enjoy classic rock and learning more about those bands that you grew up loving. The cast they chose to read this book did a wonderful job. ( )

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would considering I've never really been into media that deals with music. I'm not a big music person. I recognize fully that my music taste when I do listen isn't great by other people's standards but I mostly listen to podcasts or audiobooks anyways.

I did listen to this as an audiobook and I am 95% sure that if I had read this one physically, I would have given it a lower rating. Even though I like reading books that are written in an alternate format, I don't love reading books that are written entirely in an interview format with no other alternate media mixed in (with World War Z being a major exception) but one thing I truly hate in books is reading song lyrics. I never actually read them, I always end up skipping over them. I know I would have done that with this one if I had been reading them on the page which would have been a huge problem because they are the center of the story in so many ways.

I went into this hearing quite a bit about it and from what I heard, I expected this book to be a lot like the movie Almost Famous and it basically was in many ways. I know a lot of people like that movie and I liked it fine, but again, I just don't love musician stories. I do think the plot of this one was something I could enjoy even though I don't like these types of stories. I appreciated how Jenkins Reid interwove the feminism of both that time and our time without it becoming anachronistic or ineffective. I find feminist plot lines in books to be actually much more effective when the ideas are inherent in the lives of the characters rather than just having some sort of monologue where it feels like the reader is being preached at. I think the complexity of all the characters was really what I loved about this book. I was never really on anyone's side but I felt like I understood everyone and why they felt the way they did. Because I didn't care much about the plot, I really latched on to the characters but I think this was already in many ways a story driven by the characters and that's why it was told in an interview style through their own voices.

As I said, I really enjoyed the audiobook but I do feel it could have been pushed further in some ways. I feel like we're seeing a real rise of very original audiobooks and much more often we are seeing full cast audiobooks as well as ones that seem more like audio dramas with sound effects and everything. Some books, such as this one, Sadie by Courtney Summers, and The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. What I would have loved to see is the music become more a part of the audiobook where some songs could actually be written in collaboration with the author and a performance could be inserted into the audiobook, especially earlier on when it wouldn't interrupt important character moments. I am not super familiar with audiobook production but it does seem like there has been more stuff like that in audiobooks lately and I would have loved to see that here.

I'm glad I enjoyed this book because I wasn't sure I was going to. I had never read a Taylor Jenkins Reid book before so I didn't even know if I would enjoy her writing style. I don't know if I will ever pick up another book by her. Maybe the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo if I can get my hands on an audiobook. She doesn't write a lot of books that really call to me as a reader. But, I am glad I picked this one up and I do understand why a lot of people love this. I will not be watching the T.V. show that is coming out because I don't really watch T.V. but I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes very popular. This breed of nostalgia is very popular right now. It's 1 AM and I'm feeling so many feels about this book. Holy cow, it's good! I'm also super mad that this band doesn't actually exist because I want to listen to their music now. I was so immersed that when I got to the song lyrics, my first instinct was to look up the songs on the internet.

And oh man. That twist towards the end was a gasp out loud moment. And then a gut punch. ( )

Reading this book was like reading fanfiction about Fleetwood Mac circa Rumors. If you're interested in fanfiction about Fleetwood Mac circa Rumors then this is the book for you - the author is talented, the story is well-written, and it would make for a good beach read. I am not all that interested in such a book - hence, my rating. ( )

It has been a while since I read a book that moved me as this one did. Part of it is a question of getting the book at the right time, and another is the novel format and the relatable characters.

The story is not so big on events and happenings, but it is great in characterization and feeling. I could relate to the intensity of feelings, and the vulnerability of the characters. Also there was an element of nostalgia for a bygone era in music history where the cost of creativity and brilliance was extraordinary high, and it took blood, sweat and tears to produce a single record.

The advent of electronic gadgets and mixing software made this process simpler. Musicians can now produce their own music, and it is also easier to churn out a lot of meaningless songs that have the longevity of soap bubbles. People keep coming back to the old songs because of nostalgia and because the songs used to mean something, and the slow process of writing them made them grow into portraits of universal longing.

Daisy Jones and the Six is the imaginary band that people still remember, decades after their sudden breakup. It is written in the form of an interview with the different characters relating the story of their rise and breakup from their varying (and sometimes conflicting) perspectives. Throughout the telling you get a glimpse of their struggles, with emotional issues, with drugs and addiction and with their intensity. The structure makes their public struggle come alive, and reminds us of our own struggles in life.

I paraphrase another reviewer when I say here, that this book does what great fiction should. It makes you feel, and relate. The characters are brilliant because their pains and struggles are so relatable. They could have easily been my favourite band too. ( )

This book is an attempt to piece together a clear portrait of how the renowned rock band Daisy Jones & The Six rose to fame - as well as what led to their abrupt and infamous split while on tour in Chicago on July 12, 1979.
