NGL, after reading the sequel to another beloved YA book and being disappointed (if curious you can probably find my review somewhere in my YA list, but this isn't about that), I was afraid this might be another author who listened too much to her squee'ing fans. So happy to say that Rainbow Rowell is true to her story and herself and chose not to create extended fanfic. This is a story about what happens after the hero's journey, where the heroes may still heroes or--maybe not so much anymore, all wrapped in a new adventure in the very different magical land of big and wide USofA.

Even under the best of circumstances, couples don't communicate. So I am glad she tackled the truth of broken people suffering from complete and utter loss, severe PTSD, childhood scars, who love each other and still fail. Love does NOT conquer all. At least not yet. It shouldn't and the reward will be extra good.

If I knew there was going to be a third book I might have waited a little while longer to read this one. It is going to be a long wait. ( )

as a cisgender woman, i was pretty sure i would never understand what "blue balls" really meant.

well. now i do.

i feel like i spent the entire time waiting for something that never came. alright alright alright, so. WHAT HAppENS HERE IS. i knew simon would be an entire wreck- that was to be expected. and i actually quite like the direction that took, hes a reckless (wayward, i guess) mess and i love that for him. he gets to have that, after everything he's been through. he can like, rip his shirt off and run into a room full of vampires going WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! if his heart so desires. he can have that. but wasn't baz supposed to be like. his anchor? and isn't penny supposed to be reliable? and why the HELL is agatha still around for god's sake, insufferable blonde piece of furniture.

and im torn here because, in theory, i get it. i GET why everyone is a mess. i GET the space between simon and baz. its just that i dont want it. okay, yes, thats the irony of the whole thing, im still gonna bitch about it, alright? and its not that i feel that im OWED happiness for them. i get that shit happens and its not all sugar and rainbows and im mostly fine with that. BUT RESOLVE IT MAYBE??? i feel like they didnt have one meaningful conversation in the entire book. like, this whole thing wouldnt even be HAppENING if yall talked to each other. what, we do this like The Straights now? yell at each other over dinner? we do not!!

so thats where the blue balls thing comes from. and yes, i hope the whole thing gets resolved in the next (and last) book, but also, the fact that it isnt makes this book feel like its just a phat bridge, a whole entire book of nothing. an interlude. because the plot is kinda weak in itself -the enemy isnt as interesting this time around. the insidios humdrum as a villain was fascinating because it wasn't even an entity (or was it?? we still dont know!! thats brilliant!!) and there were politics mixed in, and pride, and secrets, and betrayals and madmen and thats what made it incredible. this is just. a bunch of losers. and they dont even get wiped out. that's frustrating as hell!

and most of the characters dont even feel like themselves. they're... soggy. bland. the most interesting character is the normal, shepard. good guy, i hope we get to see him in the future.

all in all, im pissy. i wanted to like it a lot more than i did because i read wayward son immediately after finishing carry on and i still had the jitters for the first one, and the contrast was. stark. the scenes i didnt care so much for dragged on too long, and the few happy ones that i wanted to bathe one were skimmed over, and thinking back im sure its like- poetic, like thats how it felt to them. you know how you feel that the good things never last as long as you want them to? BUT STILL.

i didnt HATE IT, and i think i would have liked it better as its own thing, but after carry on... i am a bit disappointed. hopeful for the future (the characters cant relate). but disappointed nonetheless. i do really hope Any Way The Wind Blows fixes this mess or else im gonna be real pissed off.

With Simon having lost his magic and no longer the chosen one. His sense of worth is dropping. As a result, his relationships are suffering as well. After Penelope pushes both Simon and Baz into a trip to America to see Agatha. Simon starts to perk up again. But their road trip soon turns into a rescue mission.

This book was good, I liked it a lot, but it is nothing compared to the first book. I know that sometimes book two's can be hard for both authors and reading. So I'm just going to hope that is what happened here and that the next book will be at least closer to the greatness of the first book. The biggest issue was that Baz and Simon were missing that spark that they had in the first one. The romance was on fire, here its almost not worth mentioning. It just missing something from the action too, maybe she finished to much off after the first book, but the main plot just felt really lackluster. ( )

teen/adult fantasy fiction (magicians, vampires, demons, action/adventure with queer interest)

I missed the first book, but remembered enough from [b:Fangirl|16068905|Fangirl|Rainbow Rowell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1355886270l/16068905._SX50_.jpg|21861351] to kind of know who the characters were. It works ok as a standalone, but since you'll likely get invested in the characters it'd be better to start with the first one. ( )

This is the second book in the Simon Snow series, which has a wonderfully strange origin story. Rainbow Rowell invented the world and the characters for her novel Fangirl, to serve as the Harry Potter-esque series the titular fangirl was obsessed with. But she was so taken with them that she then couldn't resist writing their story herself. Or part of it, anyway, as the first volume, Carry On was written as if it were the final book in a multi-volume series that doesn't actually exist. Or maybe a fanfictional version of an ending to a non-existent book series... The levels of meta can make your head hurt, and they amuse me endlessly.

Anyway. This one is set after the big happy ending, and a de-magicked Simon Snow has fallen into something of a depression now that he no longer has a purpose in life. So his friend Penelope and his maybe-boyfriend Baz take him on a road trip through America, hoping that will help to snap him out of it. Along the way, of course, they have some supernatural adventures, most of them involving vampires, and end up having to dash to the rescue of a friend they were just hoping to drop in on for a visit.

I loved the previous one so much I basically read it in one sitting. This one wasn't quite as compelling, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Almost more than it feels like I should have, somehow. I mean, there's maybe not huge amounts of substance here, despite a few clever world-building elements. But it's just such a delightfully fast, breezy, fun, oddly cheering read, one that, I think, actually does scratch much the same itch as certain types of well-written fanfiction do.

The ending feels very open for another sequel, by the way, and I'm very much crossing my fingers that we'll get one. I honestly do feel like I could happily read these forever. ( )
