Anthony B. Carty is a leading British professor of international law. Anthony Carty is a renowned British professor of international law, a PhD graduate of Cambridge University, whose main research interests are in the philosophy and history of international law and international relations. He has taught at a number of universities, including the University of Aberdeen and Tsinghua University, and is currently a Visiting Professor at Peking University, where he moved from the UK to Hong Kong in 2009 to take up the position of Chair of Public Law. Anthony Carty, also known as Tony Carty, is the Cheng Yu-Tung Chair Professor of Law at Tsinghua University, and was born in Ireland in 1948, and studied mainly in the United Kingdom, including Queen's University Belfast, University College London and Cambridge University. He studied at Queen's University Belfast, University College London and Cambridge University, where he received his PhD in 1973. Prior to teaching at Tsinghua University, he was Professor of Public International Law at the University of Aberdeen School of Law and Sir Y. K. Pao Chair of Public Law at the University of Hong Kong. Professor Carty's research interests focus on the theory of international law, the philosophy of international law and the history of international law. Since 2009, he has been researching the evolution of China's understanding of Western international law in the late Qing Dynasty and its impact on the present, with a particular focus on the South China Sea issue.
