Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect... For fans of Ruth Ware and Tana French, a shivery, atmospheric, page-turning novel of psychological suspense in the tradition of Agatha Christie, in which a group of old college friends are snowed in at a hunting lodge . . . and murder and mayhem ensue. All of them are friends. One of them is a killer. During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they've chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands--the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30th, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year's Day, one of them is dead. The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group's tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year's Eve, the cord holding them together snaps. Now one of them is dead . . . and another of them did it. Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. But just how close is too close?… (més)

Foley has got a talent for pulling you into a story about a bunch of people in a remote place, slowly dropping information about each character, revealing secrets and psychological issues with a Turn of the Screw style build-up. I devoured The Guest List and thought I'd give this a go. It did not disappoint as a stand-alone.
Reading the two books so close together was not a good idea. They are too similar. As you get to know these people, you find that they aren't very nice or likeable, especially as drugs and alcohol are consumed steadily, inevitably guiding not-nice people to make reckless, damaging choices.
The eerie takeaway question for both: how well do you really know your friends and what binds the friendship together? For Foley, the answers are not wholesome; it's not love, it's secrets, lies, nostalgic hopes of returning to a past friendship that was never idyllic or trusting.
Well-written. Unsettling.
I'd say there is a seductive quality to her stories I could compare to a a display of perfect-looking peaches; you bring to it expectations and yearning of that perfect, juicy mid-summer, peach. You bite in. The peach taste is there, but the texture is...not quite right. There's a hidden dark spot, and the juice --there's something-- just a bit rotten... You keep taking bites eagerly looking for that elusive peachy perfection... it's close, very close, but not quite there. Her characters are full and attractive, a basket of fresh peaches. Once you spend time with them, you'll find they are sour, bruised, and damaged.

It took a while for me to properly get into this book. Point of view switches from chapter to chapter, and since my time for reading in print has been limited lately, I'd lose track of the characters when days would pass before I could get back to reading.

But when I finally carved out several reading hours, I got caught up in the story. It's cleverly plotted and makes the most of the remote Highlands lodge setting. Foley does a nice job of gradually revealing more and more about the characters, so that the likely victim and potential killers emerge slowly. She skillfully offsets those events against the stories of the two resident caretakers at the lodge, bringing a big punch to the final chapters.

A well crafted update to a classic style of mystery. ( )

A group of college friends is spending the Christmas break together at a hunting lodge. Spending time together welcoming in the New Year has long been a tradition for them, and this year the place is a remote estate in the Scottish Highlands. However, this year everything will change. This year, one of them will die, and one of them will be the killer.

Yeah, it was okay? I guess? No where near [a:Ruth Ware|9013543|Ruth Ware|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1562697198p2/9013543.jpg] and doesn't even toe the line approaching [a:Tana French|138825|Tana French|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1535655031p2/138825.jpg].

Paint by number 30-something high school characters in a soap-opera closed room mystery. Unfortunately, Foley was sloppy painting up her characters and wound up with a big ol' mess. None of them seemed real enough to hold a complicated plot together. They were more like parodies of people who should have grown up a long time ago, but didn't. I don't understand how any of them could hold down jobs.

I kinda felt sorry for the caretaker dude who was running drugs. He seemed like the sanest, most mature of the lot. Seriously. Someone should rewrite the book from his perspective watching all of these bizarre people from a distance.

On the plus side, it's very skimmable. ( )

Entertaining mystery, but I liked Ruth Ware's similar One by One better. Lucy Foley does this thing where she starts close to the end of the action and then does flashbacks but just within a few days. She did it in The Guest List also and it annoyed me both times.

I'd say this was ok, but not great. There are better mystery writers out there for sure. ( )
