This is all new to him as he comes from a country of war and destruction. As he is trying to get use to his new country, Mustafa is feeling sad and invisible. Until he meets a friend. Despite their language barrier the two children figure out a way to communicate and play- the beauty of innocence. ( ) Mustafa is an immigrant and although the author never says from where or in which decade the story is set, we can surmise that his family may be refugees or in the very least, immigrants. This story is told in an interesting manner. Instead of saying things outright, the author uses clues to draw the reader in to solve the mystery. For example, Mustafa compares the beauty and wonder of his new surroundings against the 'fire, smoke and loud noises' from his hometown on several occasions as well as not being able to understand the other characters' language. In the end, even though Mustafa cannot speak English, he manages to make friends with a little neighbor girl who has figured out his impairment and has begun the process of helping him acclimate to his new home.
