Biography & Autobiography. Science. Physics. Nonfiction. HTML:#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? The world-famous cosmologist and author of A Brief History of Time leaves us with his final thoughts on the biggest questions facing humankind.

??Hawking??s parting gift to humanity . . . a book every thinking person worried about humanity??s future should read.???NPR

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Forbes ? The Guardian ? Wired

Stephen Hawking was the most renowned scientist since Einstein, known both for his groundbreaking work in physics and cosmology and for his mischievous sense of humor. He educated millions of readers about the origins of the universe and the nature of black holes, and inspired millions more by defying a terrifying early prognosis of ALS, which originally gave him only two years to live. In later life he could communicate only by using a few facial muscles, but he continued to advance his field and serve as a revered voice on social and humanitarian issues.

Hawking not only unraveled some of the universe??s greatest mysteries but also believed science plays a critical role in fixing problems here on Earth. Now, as we face immense challenges on our planet??including climate change, the threat of nuclear war, and the development of artificial intelligence??he turns his attention to the most urgent issues facing us.

Will humanity survive? Should we colonize space? Does God exist? ????These are just a few of the questions Hawking addresses in this wide-ranging, passionately argued final book from one of the greatest minds in history.

Featuring a foreword by Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar playing Stephen Hawking, an introduction by Nobel Laureate Kip Thorne, and an afterword from Hawking??s daughter, Lucy, Brief Answers to the Big Questions is a brilliant last message to the world.

Read by Ben Whishaw, with the foreword read by Garrick Hagon and the afterword read by Lucy Hawking

Very quick tour through the mind of an iconic inspiring scientist. Not a perfect book and perfect because of this, as it shows how he goes about thinking of things.

The enigmatic puzzle pages in the middle i could not solve and just seem like gimmicks. ( )

Highlights:

✓ You get to understand some basic cosmological propositions without delving into intricate mathematical proofs (likely involving long and daunting differential equations full of partial derivatives).
✓ It covers concepts in experimental gravitational wave astronomy and the LIGO experiment.
✓ It's written in a simple and accessible language packed with pop culture references, albeit mainly targeted towards individuals from the 20th century.

Downsides:

✖ Same ideas repeated over and over.
✖ Few new insights if one has already read ABHOT. Arguments are roughly the same as in previous texts written decades ago.
✖ Overly optimistic about genetic engineering. Specifically, aspects such as human intelligence don't depend on a defined gene or set of genes. Therefore, enhancing human intelligence through genome tailoring might not be feasible in the near future. ( )

A very nice book, easy to read, but explains very well some of the big ideas in physics. I particularly liked his discussion about AI concerns, survival of the human species and space exploration! ( )

Enjoyed reading sage advice from Hawking.

It was a much quicker read than “A Brief History of Time.” He did a nice job of outlining key discoveries and even nicer at explaining what it means to earthlings. We have work to do, and need to be diligent. I’m so glad he left us with his insights. ( )

This is a good introduction to some big ideas in science and technology. Hawking touches on a bunch of subjects from a super quick overview of a variety of future looking ideas, including AI, space travel, aliens, and black holes. Because it’s so brief on a lot of the topics, it wasn’t really the book for me, but I do think it would be worth it to someone who isn’t looking for the same depth I want.

I did find the afterword which was a tribute from Lucy Hawking to her father pretty moving. ( )
