A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! "Celebrates the resilience of girls and the earthshaking power of their friendships. An eerie, unforgettable triumph." --Claire Legrand, New York Times bestselling author of Furyborn "Wilder Girls is so sharp and packs so much emotion in such wise ways. I'm convinced we're about to witness the emergence of a major new literary star." --Jeff VanderMeer, New York Times bestselling author of Annihilation A feminist Lord of the Flies about three best friends living in quarantine at their island boarding school, and the lengths they go to uncover the truth of their confinement when one disappears. This fresh, new debut is a mind-bending novel unlike anything you've read before. It's been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her. It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything. But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there's more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true. 4 STARRED REVIEWS! "Fresh and horrible and beautiful....readers will be consumed and altered by Wilder Girls."-NPR "This thrilling saga...is sure to be one of the season's most talked-about books, in any genre."--EW "The perfect kind of story for our current era." --Hypable "Take Annihilation, add a dash of Contagion, set it at an all-girls' academy, and you'll arrive at Rory Power's occasionally shocking and always gripping Wilder Girls."--Refinery29… (més)

Content Note: suicide, self harm, starvation

Plot:
Hetty, Byatt and Reese are students at the Raxter school for girls. The school is located on Raxter island and pretty much the only thing on that island. For the past 18 months, Raxter island has been hit by the Tox – a sickness that has been changing the animals and the people on the island. At least the people who survived it. Hetty has lost an eyes. Byatt grew a second spine. Reese has a claw. What hasn’t changed is the friendship between the three, as they wait to be released from quarantine on the island, to be cured. But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty is done waiting, even if it means breaking all the rules.

Wilder Girls reminded me a lot of Annihilation, though there is much more emphasis on body horror here and the two novels are far from alike (apart from a very changed nature). There is just this sense of unsettled strangeness that they both work with. In any case, I found myself entirely engrossed by Wilder Girls.

I wanted to like this book. It sounded like everything I've been craving in a novel, and came highly recommended to me.

Alas, it reads like fanfiction - or like a self-published book that never crossed an editor's table. I wish I had good things to say about it, genuinely, but the only thing I can praise is the general idea, even if it does feel suspiciously similar to that of Vandermeer's Annihilation (and I am not the first to notice the similarity, apparently).

Wilder Girls is an interesting story but it just isn't written as well as I would've liked it to be, or well enough to save it, for me. From a technical standpoint, there are a few words this author repeats so often you'll notice it, which gets me wondering how an editor didn't seem to, and this has to have had an editor, right? At least in theory? Because it was published by Delacorte Press...? I know people's tastes vary, but I'm genuinely surprised this went through in its current state.

Another thing that grated on me from a technical standpoint was the reliance on sentence fragments. This may sound like nitpicking - using sentence fragments is far from a sin - but when I say it's constant, I do mean constant; there may be more fragments in this book than actual sentences. It would be one thing if it was a stylistic choice to help you establish the narrator's voice... but then the POV shifts to a different girl, and the writing style doesn't change at all. Ultimately this choice means Wilder Girls feels less like a finished book and more like notes for a somewhat-detailed outline.

I think it's unfortunately very obvious that this was the author's first work. There was a world that existed inside her head and it didn't translate; characters will say things that are meant to be impactful but had no buildup beforehand. For example, a confession comes out of the clear blue (unless you subscribe to the idea that if someone is mean to someone else, it MUST be because they're secretly in love with that person - there was literally nothing else there that might suggest one had feelings for the other).

The blurbs that promise grittiness throw me for a loop because it didn't feel sincere to me at all. The relationships, too, felt shallow and forced. It's like the author sat down and thought "Hmm, girls on social media are talking about 'body horror' and 'going feral'. What else will get them to buy this book? Oh! Lesbians!" There was nothing genuine about it.

If I sound annoyed, it's because I am. In truth, the only reason I finished this was because it was short, and I was hoping that something would save it before the end, so I wouldn't have to go back to the friends that recommended it to me and tell them how much of a waste I feel it was. The only thing keeping me from giving it one star is that I love the idea behind it. But that's it. And it sucks that that's the only kind thing I have to say about it. I was so massively disappointed. ( )

Not my kind of horror. The most compelling thing about this book was what was growing behind Hetty's sealed-up eyelid. Alas, we never find out. ( )

You know what? I really liked the voices who read this audiobook. Bumped it up from three to four stars for that. And I generally loathe first person present tense. I don't get some of the snippets you hear about this book. "Lord of the Flies." Uh, no. There are adults who remain in control without challenge and the students still behave like they're in a society. "Ending feels like the story is just getting going." Yes and no. Yes if you were starving for plot the whole book and the appetizer of the last chapters got you ravenous. I felt about 20% like this. I love plot and it drove me nuts wondering when we were going to learn more as I was listening to the first half.

But the no is because I think this book strives to be a character study and to be about friendship in the worst/weirdest of circumstances. And it does pretty well at that. And this is teenage friendships, which are weird to begin with. TBH Byatt is probably the most intriguing of the three main friends. Effortlessly manipulative, and a past that is teased at - I couldn't figure out the deal. Does she have a personality disorder?

What I really like in all this is that the author is unflinching with the horrors, with the relationships themselves or with the body horror they live with daily. No one really gets superpowers, or if they do, they die not long after. Your parents aren't coming to save you. You might dream of reunions, but if any come, you may regret it. In fact, maybe there's no one you can really trust. Getting sick hurts and getting deformed by sickness hurts a lot. There are no easy treatments. There are no easy ways out of anything.

While I was listening, I would recognize something being set up that could have been happy or easy. In fact, sometimes I was hungry for that, even though I knew it probably wouldnt be the right choice for the story. And every time, instead of making things simple or easy for the characters or the reader, the author makes it harder, cuts deeper, tears out your shriveled heart and tosses it on the ground.

And that's the way it should be. ( )

Going to be honest. I wasn't able to finish this book. It was well written in a way that hurt me physically, but I could not finish it because of this fact. I kept reading passages and then putting it down, then picking it back up, hitting another passage, and then stopping again. I think I made it about 50% through the book before having to put it down and not pick it back up. For those of you that like body horror, this book is for you! For those of you that, like me, cannot handle it don't even bother. I give it a 3 stars because while it was well written, I could not complete it. ( )
