After a sucky beginning to college, 20-year old Shane finally decides to make a change and does a study abroad program in London. Right away we learn that Shane is an awkward, shy, quirky girl who has a dream of being an author someday. However, due to her parents’ expectations, she is a premed major. But when she found the writing program abroad in London, she couldn’t help but jump at the chance, even if it means deceiving her parents for a short time.

While in London, Shane actually finds that she’s becoming friends with her flatmates, whereas before she’d kept to herself. She also finds that she is crushing on Pilot, and they seem to have a connection. But, of course, he has a girlfriend back home. So while she often finds herself alone with Pilot and enjoys their on-off flirtatious banter, she must also debate whether she wants to keep her feelings hidden or just woman-up and tell him how she feels.

This was a book that I went back and forth with while reading about how much I liked it. Part of it was the pacing in the beginning and another part was I thought it was going to be utterly predictable. I was wrong on that final part. The pacing actually evens out though as the story moves on, and I found myself invested in Shane’s adventure abroad and wondering if she’d tell her parents she doesn’t’ want to be a doctor, if Pilot would break up with his girlfriend, and if Shane would tell Pilot how she felt.

I love the theme of this novel though, which is to not let others choose your path. After all, it’s your life, not theirs. I totally understand wanting to make your parents proud of you, but in the end you have to do what’s best for you.

Overall, this story was enjoyable and full of a lot of relatable situations and circumstances. But for me, I think it was more of a one-time read. Maybe I’d pick this book up again in a few years, but it wasn’t a story that totally blew me away like it did for others. That said, I would still recommend it, it’s a good book for sure. It’s just not one I can see myself rereading over and over again for years to come.

I've been watching Christine's Youtube channel for years now and been there all the way since she started her first novel. I had low expectation at first because Youtubers don't always write the best books but I had my faith in Christine because she has worked long and hard for it to become a thing. There is improvement to be made regarding her writing but the overall story was interesting and kept me captivated. I really enjoyed a little touch of magic that this contemporary novel had. I wish her the best for next novel and I will be watching all of the writing vlogs :) ( )

Like, 1.5 star rating.

Girl..... this ain't it. What a hot mess. I really wanted this to be good, I truly did, but it just... isn't. It reads like an Anna and the French Kiss / 17 Again self insert fanfiction (the mc is pretty much just Christine). The mental health rep is shoddy at best, the romance boring (and involves borderline cheating), and the reference-filled writing is extremely lackluster. Also the time travel / spirit guide plot twist?? That...... Happened.

I have nothing against Christine as a person & I have respect for her place in basically starting /coining booktube, but this was extremely disappointing. It vaguely improves in the last like, 20% of the novel (basically when it's not focusing on the romance) which is making me give it an extra half star but it's still a mess. ( )

Shane suspects that she might be doing college wrong. Her first year has gone by with no new friends or great memories -- just studying and hanging out in her dorm. Now, she's setting off on a fantastic adventure: a study abroad program in London. She'll be pursuing her passion for creative writing, and she's determined to break out of her shy shell and get to know people, and hopefully even (finally) kiss a boy. Of course, there's a minor problem: her parents think that the program she's in is pre-med, since that's the major that they'll pay for her to study. Shane's loving London (and the cute boy who seems really into her, in spite of the fact that he's got a girlfriend back home), but if her parents find out about her deception, there will be consequences...

So, I thought the first half of the book was pretty typical for a cute YA rom-com. I liked seeing a shy, inexperienced protagonist determined to come into her own. The second half of the book takes a surprising dive into the territory of magical realism, and I didn't love it quite as much, but by that point I was along for the ride, invested in the characters and hoping to see them together at the end. For those who love YA romance with some magical quirks, this is for you. ( )

What a pleasant surprise! I don't know the last time I read a contemporary romance or enjoyed one as much as this one. I loved reading about Shane and her friends going through life at the same time as I did. I could relate so easily with Shane and her friends, they felt like my own.

This was so light and fun, but not to the point where it was fluff. Shane and her friends have real lives that feel deep and important. Their choices matter, and it's not all about her getting the boy. As the reader though, you are totally rooting for them! It was just the right amount of making me swoon and smile, I might be addicted to this kind of book. Plus, it was definitely what I needed right now as I'm going through a rough time. I'd definitely recommend for anyone looking for a new adult with some romance. ( )
