"Be careful of the dark, dark wood... Especially the woods surrounding the town of Fir Haven. Some say these woods are magical. Haunted, even. Rumored to be a witch, only Nora Walker knows the truth. She and the Walker women before her have always shared a special connection with the woods. And it's this special connection that leads Nora to Oliver Huntsman -- the same boy who disappeared from the Camp for Wayward Boys weeks ago -- and in the middle of the worst snowstorm in years. He should be dead, but here he is alive, and left in the woods with no memory of the time he'd been missing. But Nora can feel an uneasy shift in the woods at Oliver's presence. And it's not too long after that Nora realizes she has no choice but to unearth the truth behind how the boy she has come to care so deeply about survived his time in the forest, and what led him there in the first place. What Nora doesn't know, though, is that Oliver has secrets of his own -- secrets he'll do anything to keep buried, because as it turns out, he wasn't the only one to have gone missing on that fateful night all those weeks ago. For as long as there have been fairy tales, we have been warned to fear what lies within the dark, dark woods and in Winterwood, author Shea Ernshaw, shows us why."--… (més)

*I got this book for review for my honest thoughts*

I really did enjoy the setting and the way the world for this story was built. I thought the duel POV characters and right way the story was told was super compelling and really liked the different point of views of both characters. I also found the "spell book element" to be super interesting and I really liked how it expanded the world. I was not as blew away by the mystery in this book, I thought it was easier to predict then her previous novel, but i adored the world and the setting of the wood. I also just liked the winter setting in general. The highlight of this book was the setting and the characters. ( )

It was a quick read but I feel like the story and its elements, (the mystery, the witchiness, and the romance) were watered down by the poetic and atmospheric writing. In comparison, the Author's first book The Wicked Deep had a much stronger plot and action, whereas this book was a bit.....boring. The witchiness in the book wasn't as "active" as I was expecting, more talked about in poetic ways and expressed through stories about past Walker women, the romance was shallow and the "mystery" was predictable. I am giving it three stars because the author is amazing at creating a spooky atmosphere perfect for Autumn reading and I thought the ending was interesting. It wasn't a bad read but it was iffy for me. I am interested in seeing what the author writes next because I did love The Wicked Deep, I just felt this one was a little underdeveloped.

Very sweet, slow and quiet book.
I could tell the twist immediately but I still enjoyed it ( )

Be careful of the dark, dark wood…

Especially the woods surrounding the town of Fir Haven. Some say these woods are magical. Haunted, even.

Rumored to be a witch, only Nora Walker knows the truth. She and the Walker women before her have always shared a special connection with the woods. And it’s this special connection that leads Nora to Oliver Huntsman—the same boy who disappeared from the Camp for Wayward Boys weeks ago—and in the middle of the worst snowstorm in years. He should be dead, but here he is alive, and left in the woods with no memory of the time he’d been missing.

But Nora can feel an uneasy shift in the woods at Oliver’s presence. And it’s not too long after that Nora realizes she has no choice but to unearth the truth behind how the boy she has come to care so deeply about survived his time in the forest, and what led him there in the first place. What Nora doesn’t know, though, is that Oliver has secrets of his own—secrets he’ll do anything to keep buried, because as it turns out, he wasn’t the only one to have gone missing on that fateful night all those weeks ago.
