Get swept away in Erin A. Craig's mesmerizing House of Salt and Sorrows. As one by one her beautiful sisters mysteriously die on their isolated island estate, Annaleigh must unravel the curse that haunts her family. Be careful who you dance with. . . . In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed. Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor with her sisters and their father and stepmother. Once there were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls' lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last--the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge--and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods. Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that her sister's deaths were no accidents. The girls have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn't sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who--or what--are they really dancing with? When Annaleigh's involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it's a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family--before it claims her next. House of Salt and Sorrows is a spellbinding novel filled with magic and the rustle of gossamer skirts down long, dark hallways. Get ready to be swept away.… (més)

While categorized as a young adult book, this book is enchanting for adults as well. The author does a wonderful job of creating an entirely new and unique land. This is re-telling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses with its own unique twists in a family of girls who appear to be cursed. It’s equal parts fantasy, myth, mystery, scary, romance, and religion. A thoroughly enjoyable read! ( )

“We are born of the Salt, we live by the Salt, and to the Salt we return," the High Mariner continued.”
"To the Salt," the mourners repeated."
― Erin A. Craig, House of Salt and Sorrows

After her fourth sister dies, Annaleigh can tell that something is just so off about her dealth. She starts to suspect possibly murder. Meanwhile the remaining sister are left wanting to dance after a ball proves that the entire town finds them cursed and fear it rubbing off on them. After a story by Fisher about a door that was used by the Gods and can go anywhere, the girl go in search of this door wanting to dance the nights away. Throw in a new love when Annaleigh meets a handsome stranger and is haunted by her dead sisters and this book is a scary good time.

This was a great book. It's a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses. I never really knew the original story to well so I had nothing to really compare it too, but even still I enjoyed the story. It was pretty scary in parts. The romance was a slow burn but still enjoyable. It kept me guess all through the book. I had a suspect list a mile long. Ended up my first guess was right after all. The end is crazy and makes you second guess the main character. It was fast pace and I couldn't put the book down on the last quarter of the book.
How I choose my rating:
1* Did not finish, or hated it but forced myself to finish.
2** Didn't really like it. Didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other then for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread again ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this again, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this books content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will definitely be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

A gorgeous retelling of the fairy tale of the Twelve Dancing Sisters with a definitely haunting, gothic feel. I am a sucker for WELL DONE retellings, and this one is truly unique and spooky and lush. I loved it so much and yet I'm having a difficult time putting it into words because I feel like I will just GUSH.

Craig has crafted a twisty, creative tale of family (and secrets), monsters, myth and magic, and her setting and descriptions are so vivid that I could practically see the story unfold in front of me (and it was all told in deep sea blues and greens and blacks in my mind). Her prose was gorgeous and flowing.

Annaleigh lives in a large manor with her father, stepmother, and many remaining sisters. (Because her older ones have all died mysteriously and accidentally.) Everyone believes her family is cursed. But - when another sister dies, she doesn't believe it was an accident and begins to search for what really happened.

And that is when things get really weird. And creepy. She does an amazing job of building tension in some of the darker parts of the plot. There is a lot of mythology woven into the tale, And the twists just keep coming and coming, and when I think I have a clue as to what is going on, Craig completely pulls the rug out from under my feet.

The characterization at times felt a bit unsteady - Annaleigh flopped between very suspicious to overly trusting; her father seemed very dependable until the party, and then his personality completely changed (blame it on the drinking?) There were a few sisters I felt like I couldn't tell you much about, possibly as they were referred to as "The Graces" more than their actual names. (This is what kept me from giving it five stars - I'm actually giving it 4-1/2 stars.)

I was a little confused and frustrated when Annaleigh's focus turned from her hunt to find out what really happened to her sister Eulalie to going to parties every night, but in the end, it added to the chaos and mystery and creepiness of what was happening, and even when I thought I had it figured out Craig had one more big twist to throw at me.

Overall, this book was just a big WOW for me.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy of the book for review. ( )

Brief thoughts: Slow start. Interesting concepts. So-so mystery. Some vague characters (especially the younger sisters... to the point where I could not separate the triplets or the Graces). A little more fantastical than I was expecting. I liked Annaleigh, though. Once the action gets moving in the last act, it does do with almost dizzying speed. The last third of the book was almost a race, which made for some of the slowness in the other two thirds. ( )

Retelling of the twelve dancing princesses with some very dark twists!

Annaleigh is the sixth-born of twelve sisters, but after a series of tragic deaths, she is now second in line to inherit her father’s wealth and title. The people on her island home are whispering of a curse on their family, but Annaleigh knows there’s no such thing. She also knows there’s no such thing as ghosts – yet her youngest sister claims to see them. What’s more, she’s not entirely convinced that the most recent of her sisters’ deaths was an accident. When she starts searching for answers, strange things start happening!

Creepy and enchanting and nightmarish and wonderful! Ghosts and glittering ballrooms; murder and mayhem and magic. I had to catch my breath when I finished this one! ( )
