All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer's Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery--magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. Then an act of sabotage releases the library's most dangerous grimoire, and Elisabeth is implicated in the crime. The world-building is quite impressive but the pacing really ruined it for me. I spent the last hundred-plus pages wondering why it wasn't over already. ( )

A book written for bookworms like me... I adored it! ( )

**spoiler alert** Having taken a break from magical worlds for awhile, it was nice to dive back into it with this stand-alone! I loved that it took place in a library and the books actually had thoughts and feelings (since we're all book lovers here). I also really loved the slow burn between Elisabeth and Nathaniel. I also thought Silas's sacrifice in the end was truly beautiful and a great end to his character...until he gets called back at the end of the book!! I actually wish this wasn't a stand alone so that way we could see what happens with the couple and Silas! ( )

The utterly, utterly unique concept displayed in this book is worth a read.

More of a ★★★ 3.5 really. I do want to reread it in the future.

I had fun. But I felt like it missed something. I just don't know what.

What I liked most were the (side) characters. They all had their own character which I haven't seen done well in all my years reading fantasy.

Also the ending leaves me wanting for more but it's a good ending! ( )
