Carrie is a successful TV producer. She has a perfect husband and together they have a perfect life. Until they learn that Carrie is pregnant and wants to keep the baby. She's worried she'll lose her job and when a temp, Emma, is found to take over while she's on maternity leave Carrie becomes even more worried that Emma doesn't only want her job, but she wants her entire life.

Sometimes when I finish a book I wonder what it was about the blurb that drew me towards it in the first place. I guess going behind the scenes of a hit TV show sounds interesting and what is young Emma really after? Unfortunately, in this case, going behind the scenes wasn't interesting and I couldn't care less what Emma was doing. I didn't care about any of them. Dull, one-dimensional characters doing and saying the same things over and over and over. It was all so boring! Every bit of it, right from the very beginning, boring. It's slow and far-fetched. Just after the halfway point I started skimming. I was going to give the book two stars, but then we get to the "big twist" at the end and my eyes rolled into the back of my skull. Ugh! So much unbelievable shit happening there that just made me hate the whole book.

At 40-something Carrie and her husband, Adrian, had written off children, instead embracing their dream careers as television producer and script writer, respectively. When Carrie becomes pregnant it seems like a sign and she embarks on the journey despite Adrian's hesitation. While not happy about leaving her role temporarily, Carrie is even more unhappy about the young women filling her shoes. Emma is smart and willing to do whatever it takes, but she also seems too willing to take up the seat right next to her husband too.

Adrian is a selfish, full of himself man, Emma is a peppy employee (and unreliable narrator), and Carrie is a typical new mom in the midst of both a mid-life crisis and a marriage that might have more secrets than truths. While the life Carrie and Adrian leads seems easy, like a problem like this couldn't come between them, it is Emma who reveals the cracks in their surface. We follow the three from the office to production sets and from house to house as Emma charms everyone, but leaves a sour taste in Carrie's mouth.

While Michelle Frances is a talented author and the television world seemed like a perfect change of pace for my usual thriller readers, The Temp just didn't have the wow factor I expected. I don't know how else to put this, but I was bored while reading this book. The characters didn't have many redeeming qualities and following them down a very predictable path grew tiresome. While the unique setting and character backgrounds were what drew me to the story, the thriller aspect felt so much like every other domestic drama out there right now. And honestly, the big twist was hinted at far too early on. While this may be a hit for others, it was a miss for me. ( )

Just what I needed - a gripping psychological read. Not very deep or literary but interesting characters and more twists and reveals than the average grip-lit of recent years. Made sense when I read that the author is in television. ( )

Carrie and Adrian are the “it” couple; highly successful with all the luxuries to show for it. Adrian is a script writer of popular show series; Carrie is an accomplished producer on his series. They have everything they could ever want. Or so they thought. Children were never part of their vision but when Carrie becomes pregnant, she’s so excited but Adrian is not. And now there’s a crack in their perfect world.
Enter Emma. Emma who never lived up to her parents expectations no matter what she did. Emma, who feared her parents’ disappointments but could never be the daughter they wanted her to be. But Emma is smart, young and eager and is perfect to fill in for Carrie while she is on maternity leave. But Emma has another agenda.
There are so many books out now in this genre. Psychological thrillers have become so popular and have become my favourites to read. I like to get into one, sometimes not even reading the jacket synopsis, and see where the book takes me. I like being surprised and not knowing as the book unfolds and I’m left to ponder how it’s going to play out.
This book “The Temp” didn’t disappoint. I knew early on that everything wasn’t always what it seemed. Who is Emma? And what does she really want? As more and more is revealed, there are some delightful twists and turns I did not fully expect. While a little was predictable, more towards the end, there were plenty of surprises in store.
Often a book is spoiled for me by an unlikable character but this one was not. I loathed Adrian pretty much from the beginning and throughout the whole book but it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the book. I could find very few redeeming qualities in Adrian whereas I was endeared by both Carrie and Emma. Not just because they were both women, but there was a vulnerability in both that I understood and could relate to and couldn’t help feeling a bit of an emotional attachment to both especially as bits of their worlds crumbled around them.
With so many of this genre of book out, it begins to be tougher for an author to write one that stands out, the one everyone needs to read. I found this one better than many. It was not a 5 star for me, but still highly enjoyable, intriguing and suspenseful trip for me; solid 4 stars.

The Temp – A Twisted Psychological Thriller

The Temp is a twisted psychological thriller that keeps you guessing all the way to the end, and like all psychological thrillers gets really under your skin. An examination of ambition, deception, betrayal and family, you will be drawn in, the characterisation is brilliant with a couple of characters you just cannot help disliking.

Michelle Frances, a bestselling author, and former TV executive brings all her experience into this thriller. She knows how best to get the reader gripped, and totally immersed in the story and only come up for breath for a mug of tea.

Successful TV producer, Carrie is married to Adrian, who has just become a BAFTA award winning screenwriter. She has just signed up her husband to write a brand new tv series, which the BBC have accepted and given the green light too. Things are on the up, but Carrie finds out she is pregnant, and this could not have happened at a worse time. The idea of having maternity leave fills her with dread.

Emma is the bright young thing who is taken on to cover Carrie while she is on maternity leave. Carrie becomes concerned about Emma, as she seems to want everything she has, but seems to be doing it while nobody notices. Emma seems to be obsessed with Adrian and Carrie feels cut a drift from him.

While Carrie manages to get Emma sacked, at about the same time she finds out Adrian has slept with her. Then Adrian and Emma disappear, at first it seems annoying, but they really do need to meet especially with their new series filming. Slowly Carrie, puts things together, and realises that Emma had never actually wanted to hurt her, but Adrian was the obsession. When she learns details about Emma she has to find her. While Adrian is slowly losing his mind.

Great thriller that gets under your skin and you just want more. ( )
