I've lost track of how many Dorsey books I've read, must be at least half, and this one stands out. Dorsey is not that much older than I am, and perhaps he, Serge and I are mellowing with age or perhaps this one has more heart. All of his books are escapist romps around Florida and Serge's manic episodes lead him and the reader in wild directions. This one begins in The Villages. I lived on the fringe of the Villages when I was first married and thought it was hilarious to be the youngest person in sight in the Publix and odd to have septuagenarians bagging my groceries. The Villages is a surreal Disney of a retirement community where the attractions are the plethora of chain restaurants chock-a-block with specialized medical facilities So, I was sucked in immediately. I just helped a friend write a patriotic memoir predominantly about her father's military service during WWII. Halfway through her book she decided to add an interview section asking veterans what their time in service means to them. She discovered that there is a Tuskegee Airmen bagging groceries in a Publix here in Gainesville. She interviewed him. So Serge's friendship with a Korean war hero and his wife struck a special chord. But I sense a tenderness in Dorsey's portrayal of this couple that I don't recall in previous novels. He's now 22 books into the adventures of Serge and still going strong. While some authors lose the edge over time, I think Dorsey's getting even better. Long Live Serge! Tim Dorsey’s been at it for a while. This is his 22nd (!) Serge Storms novel by my count. Unlike some other Florida writers, he hasn’t allowed the formula to get stale. And it is a formula. Serge and Coleman tool around the state in a vintage muscle car (1970 Ford Falcon, banana yellow this time) righting wrongs by inventively killing people who deserve it. It never gets old. In this edition Serge has taken an interest in senior citizens and is hitting back at those who would take advantage of them. Predatory salesmen, predatory trailer park owners, predatory caregivers. There are also Russian spies wiping out old networks, attack swans, “old people with fireworks;” a typical Serge story. Serge celebrates old people and their strength, while thankfully refusing to utter the cliché: the greatest generation. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

After all, our seniors should be revered and respected??they've heroically fought in wars, garnered priceless wisdom, and they have the best first-hand accounts of bizarre Floridian occurrences only Serge would know about. But as the resident's rally for Serge to seek justice on their behalves, two detectives are hot on the heels of Serge and Coleman's murderous trail. Old people/retirees in Florida are being taken advantage of and as luck would have it Serge wants to join the retired set.
Throw in a bunch of Russian agents and double agents from the Cold War and non stop mayhem ensues. Bonus points for lots of unique and unusual ways for people to be killed.
Quite entertaining! ( )
