I love this book and was thrilled to see it was adapted in a way that young children can read and understand. The story takes place in the Middle ages. It tells of a knight called Ivanhoe and his battles and adventures. I think it is really important to introduce classics to children at a young age and this book is perfect for that. ( ) This is a junior version of the classic tale by Sir Walter Scott. It contains the major points of the story with beautiful illustrations. The pictures look like medieval tapestries. The story tells of a knight who has gone on the Crusades with Richard the Lionheart, only to return in disgrace. He must prove he is innocent of the charge of treason, win the jousting tournament against the evil knight DuBois Gilbert, rescue the fair damsel, and come to the aid of his king. I love the original Ivanhoe, so I was very happy to find this lovely junior version. It has all the best parts, told in a noble style. The illustrations are magnificent, even if you do not care for the story. This would be a great introduction to classic literature for a middle school child. It is not a full-length chapter book, but it is longer than most "picture" books. It would also be good to use in a historical theme about medieval England, with knights and castles.
