She’s Got This I really enjoyed this book, and the woman empowerment and self-confidence it builds. It is about a little girl who wants to become a gymnast, but after falling off the balance beam, she becomes discouraged and wants to quit. Her family encourages her to stick to it and she regains the confidence in herself to return to gymnastics. This book shows that you can do anything that you put your mind to, and sticking to something can lead to great success. After seeing a gymnast on TV, Zoe decides she wants to try gymnastics too. She loves the balance beam best and is good at it - until she falls. Her family gathers around her to encourage her to try again, reminding her about how she would get back up when she was learning to walk, and sharing stories about their own failures and trying again. Then Zoe's mom takes them all out for ice cream to celebrate Zoe's first fall: "Each fall makes you better. Now you have to try again." The family has light brown skin and dark hair. The coach is blond. Other kids in the gymnastics class appear black and white. See also: Cartwheel Katie (Katie Woo) by Fran Manushkin This a great story that will catch children's attention that are interested in sports, especially gymnastics. It is a story about a girl that makes mistakes throughout her journey, but doesn't give up which is great to teach children that if it weren't for those mistakes she wouldn't have worked harder and learned more. "Even Olympians have to start somewhere. And in this charming illustrated book, Laurie Hernandez tells the story of Zoe, a little girl who dreams of flying--and becoming a gymnast. When Zoe sees a gymnast on TV, she realizes that gymnastics is just like flying. But when she first goes to class and falls off the balance beam, she discovers that following her dreams is harder and scarier than she thought. Through this heartwarming and inspirational story, featuring vibrant art from Nina Mata, Laurie imparts important lessons she learned on her way to Olympic glory: You always have to get back up and try again, and you always have to believe in yourself." -- Publisher annotation.
