What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius?his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic. Praise for Red, White & Royal Blue: "Effervescent and empowering on all levels, Red, White & Royal Blue is both a well-written love story and a celebration of identity." ? NPR "I took this with me wherever I went and stole every second I had to read! Absorbing, hilarious, tender, sexy?this book had everything I crave. I'm jealous of all the readers out there who still get to experience Red, White & Royal Blue for the first time!" - Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of Love and Other Words and Roomies " Red, White & Royal Blue is outrageously fun. It is romantic, sexy, witty, and thrilling. I loved every second." - Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Maybe in Another Life… (més)

I must start this review by stating that I don't tend to read contemporary or romance novels, but I decided to pick this one up because of the LGBT themes and because I felt like reading something light and fun.

This book was alright. It was definetely first and foremost a romance. It had some political elements surrounding the main relationship, but it was very surface level for the most part.

Alex and Henry were cute, but I liked them better at the start of the book. Their interactions were funnier then and I wished their friendship lasted longer because these kids move fast. One minute they didn't really like each other, the next they were sharing funny comments and opening up to one another and then they suddenly started having sex. As it happens in most romances (which is also the reason I don't tend to read them) when they start a relationship their conversations and their scenes together revolve around sex all the time. I have to give it credit that after some months together they start talking about their lives again instead of being just lust. I guess it makes sense that was all they thought and talked about at first because it was the start of the relationship, but it sounded repetitive to me because I don't care for sex scenes.

The relationships between other characters were also sweet and almost everyone was a nice person and those that weren't were depicted as complete villains. It was very black and white. Every character also seemed to talk so casually and that felt a little weird to me (I'm not used to contemporary books and it shows).

I never felt that there was any way that things wouldn't end up perfectly well for everyone (well, everyone that was "good"). It was very predictable and I don't like to know exactly everything that is going to happen in a story. It reminded me of "The Princess Diaries" because of the overall feel of the story, but with a little more focus on the actual politics and LGBT characters.

So, it was an OK book, it was just not my thing. It is perfectly fine for anyone that enjoys a story with an happy ending and that makes you feel like everything is going to be alright. ( )

An american writer tries to write scenes from the history of Britain, and fails.

The good:
—Plus one star for citing Hamilton/Laurens letters and picking not the obvious one.

—This passage:
You see, for me, memories are difficult. Very often, they hurt. A curious thing about grief is the way it takes your entire life, all those foundational years that made you who you are, and makes them so painful to look back upon because of the absence there, that suddenly they’re inaccessible. You must invent an entirely new system.

—There is a lot of good fanfics on AO3, free of charge, which are better thought through and written, than this book.

The bad:
—There is no believable conflict in this book and the plot feels extremely far-fetched. Every character from 2020 still lives in XVII century —or stuck in a really bad acid trip,— otherwise I can't explain to myself why they are so dumb to seriously take that Bright Young Gays romance can ruin lives and destroy the nation. In vain I waited for somebody to ask the right questions, so this gay drama spiralled down to be extremely vague and embarrassing.

—The smut in this book is awkward. In fanfics, descriptions of graphic sex scenes frequently being adopted from one fic to another, and I was surprised to find some of these nomad descriptions in this book.

—Superficial politics. The Queen is evil, the Blues are shining messengers of God, the Reds are child-eating rapists, the Gays are suffering martyrs. ( )

Where do I even start? It’s ridiculous and fantastic and so much fun and is everything I could ever want for a book. I sobbed through the entire last third of the book—it’s fine, I’m fine. So grateful to Casey for writing stories where I can see myself so easily. ( )
