"Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a rare book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians--it is a place of lost cities and seas of honey, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a beautiful barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose--in both the rare book and in his own life"--… (més)

It took a long while to get far enough into this book to feel like it was going somewhere. It reminds me of MMORPGs in the sense you have to sink about a 100 hours to start to get a pay off. I only really started to prick up my ears at about page 300-odd.
Was it woth the time and read? Yeah, it was well written and it was an adventure to read. Switching between multiple naratives and books, to some degree. Over all I think the lore books that were between the 'present' characters were of much more interest to me than Zachary's story.
This book is for someone who likes a story that is like slow burn, "the journey more importaint than the destination," kinda story. Not for those that rush for the ending and find conclusions fullfilling. ( )

So many stories within the story, people in different times. A book that I neede to flip around in to pull threads together. ( )

Once again we are given a beautiful story tangled up in time. Erin Morgenstern has woven another intricate tapestry of story, magic, friendship, adventure, and love. So much magic.

second time around I listened to the audio and it was well done! ( )

When you write about a book in a library, ask a cataloger how it would be cataloged.
This book started off with "oh an abandoned part of the library blah blah blah" which struck me as pretentious "nobody READS anymore" whining. It stuck with the main character, who couldn't just be Zachary, but his full freaking name every damn time he showed up.

This was a tiny detail, but it stuck out to me. I thought of Eleanor as a Black woman. She is described as having "light brown skin" when we first meet her, so that's what I pictured. Simon's race isn't described, but Eleanor sees blonde with brown eyes, indicating a white person. So Simon's description Eleanor in comparison to women he knew, with a focus on her skin, was uncomfortable. Whhhyyyy do we need this guy? Thankfully he left. But then he came back cause he had a cool coat.

I was excited to read this but it eventually became a chore. Wandering through the disjointed narrative with seemingly pointless “adventures” was wearying. The characters are very one dimensional, weak and twee. A book about books it is but not one to seek out. ( )
