A compelling read with many intriguing characters, both good and evil. As with many Dickens novels the author tends to become a bit verbose, but don't give these wanderings short shrift or you may miss some telling satire or other profound offerings. Classic Dickens. Very good. ( ![]() An early novel, this melodramatic tale of young Nickleby’s adventures as he struggles to seek his fortune in Victorian England resembles The Pickwick Papers in structure, although not always in tone. Throughout, comic events are interspersed with Dickens’s moving indictment of society’s ill treatment of children and the cruelty of the educational system. Exquisite illustrations. Another great classic from Charles Dickens. One family’s hardship after their father had pass away and they ask for the help from their uncle. Here's what I wrote after reading in 1984: "Undoubtedly a Dickens! Nicholas Nickleby, the young hero, and his beautiful and refined sister, Kate, face a myriad of evil and comic characters as they move from mourning the death of their father to the joy of love and marriage. Most memorable characters: 1) Wackford Squeers, the sadistic and downright miserly Yorkshire schoolmaster, 2) Mrs. Nickleby, with her amazing ability to partially recall details of the past - how was it that a summer's day reminded her of a roast?" The most gorgeously theatrical of all Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby follows the delightful adventures of a hearty young hero in nineteenth-century England. Nicholas, a gentleman's son fallen upon hard times, must set out to make his way in the world. His journey is accompanied by some of the most swaggering scoundrels and unforgettable eccentrics in Dickens's pantheon. From the dungeon-like Yorkshire boys' boarding school run by the cruel Wackford Squeers to the high-spirited stage of Vincent Crummles's extraordinary acting troupe, Nicholas Nickleby is a triumph of the imagination, bursting with color, humor, and poignant social commentary.
