The course through this novel is a strong steady compelling current with brief rapids. In the stories of two families of NY policemen who met as rookies and lived next door in a suburb we are confronted with the devastating effects of untreated trauma and mental illness and the healing power of real connection and engagement. For me the main detraction is the relentless distance from the subjects, but it works and may prove a plus for others. ( )

This was an audiobook which added to my enjoyment of the book as it is about difficult subjects that would have been hard going if only reading it.

Two young New York City cops end up buying houses next door to each other in a suburb. Other than the job they don't really have a lot in common with each other. Francis is an Irish immigrant who thought he would try out being a cop and then just kept at it. Brian is married to Anne who is also an Irish immigrant. Anne has pyschological problems which in the era of the beginning of the book, the 1970s, was not as treatable as it is now. Francis and his wife, Lena, have three daughters and the youngest, Kate, is the same age as Brian and Anne's only child, Peter. The two are best friends when they are younger and are working up to becoming more than just friends when a horrible incident occurs. Anne gets hold of Francis's gun and when Brian goes over to talk to her she shoots him in the face. Brian survives and Anne is tried for attempted manslaughter. She is convicted but sent to a treatment facility in the northern part of New York state. Brian is released from the police service for not securing his handgun. He and Peter go to live with Brian's brother, George, and shortly after Brian moves to South Carolina leaving Peter to be raised by George. A number of years pass with Peter having no contact with Kate but then they reunite, start dating and eventually marry. Anne is finally released as having been rehabilitated and she starts working in Saratoga. She refused to see Peter while she was in the facility and has no idea where he is living but a private detective is able to find him quite easily. Anne starts driving to New York City to watch him and Kate but never initiates contact with them. Kate, however, knows she turns up from time to time. At a time of crisis when she doesn't know how to deal with Peter's alcoholism she reaches out to Anne. It takes many false starts but the relationships between all the main characters (with the exception of Francis) improve.

After a difficult beginning it is Anne's story that is the one that appealed to me the most. Mental illness was (and is) so misunderstood but this is a book that shows there is a reason for optimism about treatment. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the issue. ( )

This book was authentic and honest with really well-developed characters. I found it totally absorbing. Highly recommended. ( )

I read this book after hearing about the novel from a friend. The story and the characters portrayed kept me reading compulsively until the last few chapters, when the author’s momentum seemed to falter a bit. Overall, this was an exceptional book. ( )

Alcoholism, bipolar, with two family saga with simple language, but intriguing story. Neighbor boy and girl love each other from childhood and through their marriage despite challenges. ( )
