The Heretic's Child (edició 2016)

The Heretic's Child, by Nyasia Maire, follows Emma Smith, a woman with a precious secret. She is to ascend to be the next Cybele; an ancient being, charged to aid humans and collect their memories upon death. Her character is sweet and strong, with an intelligence that shines brighter than any star.

Thomas, as the love interest of the story, is a mysterious and brave individual that stays loyal to Emma and her cause. The pair's relationship shows a genuine, loving bond that is rare to see. Themes of loss and duty follow the pair as they journey away from their homes, in a desperate attempt to flee a hidden evil.

The concept of the Cybele and their community of Catalogers and Counsellors is fascinating. I found myself reading non-stop and am now craving a second glimpse into the life of Emma and her duties. The writer's style gives us a unique view of both male and female perspectives in regards to danger, love, and duty combined. The first person narration was easy to follow and had me feeling especially close to the characters.

Nyasia Marie is a voice of much wisdom. They have a beautiful way with words and have created a fictional world that I would happily immerse myself in for the rest of my life.
