I enjoyed the first entries in this series. This one was not quite as enjoyable for me. The constant patting JoAnna on the back (figuratively) became a bit annoying and tiresome. Yes we know she’s Sherlock’s daughter. We get it. Move on. There was one other really annoying point - I listened to the audiobook version, and I went back and listened a couple of times to make sure I heard the narrator correctly, (and perhaps the narrator got it wrong) but when JoAnna pointed out that Exodus was the first book of the Old Testament, Dude. Come on. It’s a little things but still. Now, having said all that, I’m sure I’ll read the next installment for now. ( )

Once again, the Watson family becomes embroiled in not only a murder but state affairs as they search for a codebreaker, Alistair Ainsworth, abducted by the Germans. In this cat and mouse game, Joanna and Ainsworth must outwit the Germans while unmasking a spy in the governments own ranks.

This is the third book in the Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries series. As such, it cannot be read as a standalone book. Most of the character development took place in the earlier two books.

However, with that caveat, this book is eminently readable. The writer plays fair with the mystery; there's no "the butler of the thrice-removed cousin did it," with no knowledge of the butler or cousin. The history was of interest, set just before the end of World War I.

I'd recommend this series for open-minded fans of Sherlock Holmes or anyone who enjoys historical mysteries. ( )

One evening in November 1915 a very wet Dr. Alexander Verner arrives at 221b Baker Street to tell his tale to the Watsons and Joanna, concerning a patient he deemed to held against his will. In the next mornings' newspaper, details of the disappearance of a Alistair Ainsworth, a cryptographer, were stated asking for help in locating him.
Joanna and the Watsons must find him before he reveals any secrets.
An enjoyable and interesting well-written mystery, easily read as a standalone story.

This is still an interesting series with excellent and evolving characters. The decoding sections were a bit of a slog but apt for the storyline. ( )
