Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the '90s about a women's book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a real monster.

Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

This predictable pattern is upended when Patricia meets James Harris, a handsome stranger who moves into the neighborhood to take care of his elderly aunt and ends up joining the book club. James is sensitive and well-read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn't felt in twenty years. But there's something off about him. He doesn't have a bank account, he doesn't like going out during the day, and Patricia's mother-in-law insists that she knew him when she was a girl??an impossibility.

When local children go missing, Patricia and the book club members start to suspect James is more of a Bundy than a Beatnik??but no one outside of the book club believes them. Have they read too many true crime books, or have they invited a real monster into their homes… (més)

I’ve read not 1 or 2, but 3 Hendrix books after another. This one is my favorite!
Housewives from the 90s. Full of homemaking and not much else, unless they get to crack open some books. This neighborhood is ideal and everything is just so perfect, until it isn’t and it all seems to be the cause of a newcomer.
This book took its time exposing the nerve endings of Patricia, our main character, her relationships and the environment. The whirlwind this woman goes through with herself, her family and her friends is just jaw dropping and sets you on the rollercoaster of all the feels.
*****there is a trigger warning for chapter 33, so please be prepared ( because I had zero clue it was coming).
This book has epic tone, true horror and gore. I had a moment of elation near the end of the book. It’s morbid, but I think you’ll agree. I don’t do spoilers, so that’s all you get ( )

If you need an escape from the news cycle for a bit this is perfect. The opening scene of the main character faking her way through a book club discussion is priceless. Some genuinely scary stuff too. ( )

A look at Southern life, a woman's place, the importance of saving face and filling those in-between moments with moments from the pages of a book. The women test the bonds of friendship and Southern women's responsibility.

Enter a mysterious stranger in town to handle the estate of a family member. Through mysterious disappearances, serial killers, mother-in-law eating rats, and a vampire hunting one of the book club members, every page is filled with surprises.

If you like interesting plot-turning books this one is for you.

There are many ups and downs or rater lulls and peaks but I will say that this book is a solid 3 stars. ( )

Well it’s definitely an interesting book. It lags in some spots but does pick up. I really didn’t like the aspect of the children and I thought that could have been changed. ( )

I will say that this book was well written, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I do not like Horror at all and didn't realize this book fell into that category. I had to stop reading it on a few different occasions due to the excessively detailed grotesque scenes. That aside, there were a few loopholes as well and long stretches of boring chapters. I would also say that the sexism in the book and the *SPOILER* rape scene was just too much, I spent the entire book enraged. ( )
