Birch and Danny are caught by the Japanese and must fight for their life's. Will they make it out of POW camp and live on to find their answers and serve their country or will they perish before they can live out their dreams?

The sequel to the book Wings of a Flying tiger certainly keeps up with the wonderful development of characters. I was engrossed in this story without a doubt. I wanted to know what was going to happen to Birch and Danny and was hoping against hope that both of them would live through the story and find happiness. It has a good pace with skipping ahead in time so that you can see how the characters are developing and getting the answers to the questions that you start to ask yourself throughout the book.

Overall, amazing character development and storytelling that make you want to keep reading, makes you feel something, and makes you relate and want the characters want.

I can't wait to start reading the third and final installment of this series. ( )

When I requested this book, I did not realize that it was a sequel. I am going to read the first book and then come back and review this one.

This book is the absolutely heart wrenching tale of two brothers - one American and one Chinese - and their role in World War 2.

The book is very well written, if hard to get through emotionally at times. ( )

Will of a Tiger is the sequel to Wings of a Flying Tiger and continues the story of Birch Bai through the end of WWII, the Chinese Communist Revolution, and his later life on Taiwan. It tells of his struggle to adapt to his war wounds, both physical and emotional, and to move forward in his life taking into account the vows he made and the reality of the present world. It is a compelling story that takes you into the personal thoughts, feelings, and struggles of Birch. As with Wings of a Tiger, I was astounded at the cruelty of people against those of differing political positions and philosophies, although I probably shouldn't be. Birch and the other characters seem real with real problems/experiences and not bigger than life, but people you might meet and know. The location is well described and you can feel as if you are there or see it in your mind's eye, although the locations never overwhelm the personal stories. It also tells of the importance of familial and friendship ties and how they add to the richness of life and thus the story. It has a satisfactory ending that was a bit of a surprise. I enjoyed the story itself as well as learning more about a time and place that I am relatively unfamiliar. ( )

This exciting sequel to her previous WWII novel takes place in the jungles of Burma. Downed and crippled Flying Tiger pilot Birch is captured, interred with other prisoners and tortured by the Japanese. His concern is for his fighter pilot buddy Danny. He is rescued from a burial trench by local natives and is hospitalized for months in a coma. While recovering from his wounds the young family house maid Xiao Mei reads to him and fortifies him with Chinese herbs. She follows him when the family is forced to leave China as the Communists take over. They flee to Taiwan but it appears that is not so safe either. Birch recovers, learns to walk with his prosthetic leg. Xiao Mei is always in the background with devoted care. Birch is picked up by the Nationalist Secret Police and tortured and eventually released after the zealous efforts of little Xiao Mei. General Bai dies not knowing that Birch is in prison. In the final chapters Birch, now married to Xiao Mei and their daughter travel to San Francisco to see Danny’s sister. Be prepared for a for a stunning conclusion. When I first started to read this I thought ho hum just another war novel but I couldn’t put it down. Unfortunately with this brief summary I have cut through all the melodrama and there is plenty. I also had a personal connection. The father of one of my college classmates was a colonel in General Chenault’s Flying Tigers. She related to me a number of anecdotal events including how proud he was of the Burma patch on his uniform.

I was provided with an electronic copy in return for an honest review. ( )

Birch Bai was in trouble. Enemy fire had crippled his P-40, and he’d struggled, hoping to fly long enough to get out of Japanese-occupied territory. He was near Dashan, a mountain town in Yunnan Province, when the sputtering engine quit. The bullet-riddled plane plummeted into an uncontrollable spin, barely giving him enough time to slide open the canopy and tumble out.
