The chief displays his culinary skills. A BIRTHDAY LUNCH (a Bruno, Chief of Police Story of the French Countryside) is a short story by Martin Walker. Mr. Walker often published these ‘stories’, almost like diary entries, in order to keep us up to date with Bruno’s day to day activities. Good food, good wine, good cooking skils; an archeological find while taking an early morning run; speaking with friends and neighbors as he makes his village rounds; friendship, good will and generosity in the lovely Dordogne area of southwestern France - all come together in a lovely birthday lunch for Florence. This is very pleasant, cheerful reading about one of my favorite fictional characters. Sprinkled with scenes of the landscape of the south of France as well as tributes to the area's ancient past, Martin Walker has written a charming-- and very short-- short story to whet the appetites of all Bruno Chief of Police fans. "A Birthday Lunch" centers around the preparations for, and enjoyment of, Florence's birthday. Readers will get to experience a bit of what Walker's series is famous for-- mouth-watering food and warm, meaningful camaraderie. Bruno and his friends know what is most important in life. A large part of it is basically simply a narrated recipe…
“He beat the yolks and eggs together with a hundred fifty grams of sugar until they were creamy.”
… and that really doesn’t float my boat, sorry.
The rest is just plain boring. Moving on.
