Get Thee Back to the Future! is a much welcome return to form for Ian Doescher's pop-culture/Shakespeare mash-ups. The author has been floundering in the quagmire of Star Wars prequels and the somehow even more execrable Disney sequels for a few years now, but by returning to the well of beloved adventure-serials like Back to the Future, Doescher seems revitalised. The jokes and in-jokes sparkle like they used to back when he first came on the scene with his mash-up of the original Star Wars trilogy, the soliloquies and asides breathe properly, and iconic lines of dialogue (completely absent in the post-1983 Star Wars films) are always neat to read in Shakespearean.

This is a long-winded way of saying that the fun returns to Doescher's pop-parody books here. The author has always written with love and care; note, for example, his Afterword here, in which he points out how Marty McFly is in every scene, so he wrote them differently to give any potential actors of his play time to make costume changes. When this ever-present care and craft is joined with a good source story – something Doescher has not really done since he wrote his mash-ups of the Star Wars original trilogy in 2013-14 – it is very rewarding. William Shakespeare's Get Thee Back to the Future! from Ian Doescher is a fun parody(ish) mash up Shakespeare and popular culture in the form of the film Back to the Future.

I say parody(ish) because while it certainly meets the popular definition of parody (an imitation of a writer's style) it actually does so without a lot of what is included in the actual literary definition of parody, namely the exaggeration of that style. What Doescher does, I think, is even more difficult. He did not overly exaggerate the style but let the humor of hearing/reading a well known film in Shakespearean form. The points where he exaggerates, because it isn't over the top, are that much more effective.

I haven't read the others in the series and while I am not running out to get them I will likely read them at some point. Highly recommended for both fans of Shakespeare and fans of the film.
