I have mixed feelings about this book. I know David Bell writes decently, and although this book’s premise was a bit unique, the writing really ng lacked...something. I found myself getting annoyed at little things. Boy meets girl in airport. Girl has secrets and is (kind of) on the run. Boy chases Girl all over half the country to learn her secrets.
I found Boy to be a bit cavemanish and Girl was a bitch. I just didn’t really connect with any of the characters, except foster mom Valerie. She was pretty cool. 3.5 stars rounded up. ( )

It's been a hot minute since I've read a mystery thriller so had a good time with Layover. In saying that, it was pretty light on the mystery or the thriller. I never really felt surprised by the turns the plot took. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop but it never got there and stayed pretty paint by the numbers.
I liked the characters well enough and thought the author did a good job of making the key players relatively well rounded for a mystery novel. I really liked Bell's writing style and thought he did well introducing us to the main characters and supporting players.

I did have a problem with the timeline at times which in part was due to the characters actions and partly due to the way the author flipped back and forth between two narrators. It felt like the detective of the story could have resolved the mystery much faster if she just acted more promptly. Another huge detractor for me was that the last few chapters really drove me mad. There is building anticipation and then there is dragging out the plot out needlessly and the end of Layover was the latter. ( )

This is the first book I have read by this author and it definitely won't be the last. This is the story of Joshua, who meets Morgan at an airport on a layover. They spend a little time together and Morgan tells him, they will never see each other again. Joshua follows her halfway across the country, trying to find her and find out why she left. Joshua is then followed by Simon, who is trying to find Morgan, because he believes she killed his brother. This story is woven and weaved and wrapped. I don't feel like this was suspenseful, but I wasn't bored. ( )

In my opinion, a far-fetched plot line but nonetheless a darn good read. Man meets women in airport and is captivated. They talk about their problems in a generalized way and were simpatico. After a drink, she gives him a not to be forgotten kiss and then leaves to board her flight. Before boarding his flight he sees on social media that she is a missing person. On a whim, he changes his flight to hers. He thinks he can help her. What ensues is a cat and mouse story where the connect, only to disconnect because she is fleeing from a terrible thing she did. He wants to know what. He gets more than he bargained for but sticks with it to get his questions answered by her. By the end of the book he does, with a surprise ending. ( )
