This novel is a wonderful window into the life of a teenage girl while also dealing with extreme issues. A wonderful read for young adults. ( )

This was a tough read and I never would have heard of it had it not been an assignment for my kid. There's nothing particularly graphic in the book but being a witness to Mel's feelings of despair and solitude were painful. ( )

“Speak” by Laurie Anderson was a great read! It wasn't a long read, but it was satisfying. The novel was intense at times, even dark, yet was able to maintain comic elements as well when it was appropriate. You get deep into the teenage mindset in this book and see life from that perspective. For that reason I recommend this book to both teenagers and adults, and believe it would be a great addition to a middle school or high school library. Despite being a fairly short book, there was a lot of depth and I enjoyed it. Give it a read for yourself and enjoy. ( )

Melinda is a great character, and Anderson really succeeded in giving her a strong and consistent voice. She definitely rings true as a high school aged girl, and I can hear echoes of my younger self in her. That being said, this was a little hard to read because I'm out of high school and grown up, but not far enough away from it to prevent horrible flashbacks and cringing. I would have loved to have had this book when I was 13-18 years old, and I hope it stays in schools and out where people have access to it. Melinda really proves that teenagers are belittled far too often, and that we really have to pay attention to them as individuals. If you liked this book then you should also read Sarah Dessen's Just Listen. It's very similar to Speak. ( )

The plot is gripping and the characters are powerfully drawn, but it is its raw and unvarnished look at the dynamics of the high school experience that makes this a novel that will be hard for readers to forget.

In her YA fiction debut, Anderson perfectly captures the harsh conformity of high-school cliques and one teen's struggle to find acceptance from her peers. Melinda's sarcastic wit, honesty, and courage make her a memorable character whose ultimate triumph will inspire and empower readers.

Anderson expresses the emotions and the struggles of teenagers perfectly. Melinda's pain is palpable, and readers will totally empathize with her. This is a compelling book, with sharp, crisp writing that draws readers in, engulfing them in the story.

But the book's overall gritty realism and Melinda's hard-won metamorphosis will leave readers touched and inspired.

Laurie Halse Anderson's first novel is a stunning and sympathetic tribute to the teenage outcast. The triumphant ending, in which Melinda finds her voice, is cause for cheering (while many readers might also shed a tear or two).
