This is told from the point of view of Danny. Danny is in high school when his stepmother kicks him out of the house, after his father dies. He and his older sister, who is on her own and working are very close. They become obsessed with the Dutch House where they grew up. The house is now owned by their father's widow and they often come by and sit in the car together watching the house and talking about their future and their past. Their lives are changed when the mother who abandoned them returns. She feels they must confront their past by knocking on the door of the Dutch House. This was a very enjoyable read/listen. The story is well done, the characters well developed. I never quite knew where it was going so it felt fresh. I listened to the audible version which was narrated by Tom Hanks, whose voice is comforting and warm. I highly recommend. Great narration by Tom Hanks so that helped, but generally a compelling and immersive story of a complicated family. Loved the book. About growing up, growing older, family, memory, forgiveness. I’ve liked other Patchett books but I think this is my favorite so far. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril's son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

The way the views of the past changed with time and perspectives, like gentle washes of watercolor.
The lifelong loyalty of brother and sister.
Forgiveness despite long-held resentments.
That painting on the cover. (
