At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril's son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.… (més)

5 stars until Evil Stepmother shows up and does her thing and the kids have to deal with that. 2 stars after that. ( )

The premise of the story was based on a young mother leaving her children behind and the children bonding together through the thick and thin of the life. Even though I knew someone with similar circumstance, it is still hard for me to comprehend why the mother abandoned her children. Besides the main point, Maeve reminds me of my sister who is fiercely protective of the family. ( )

A rags to riches to rags tale, about parental abandonment and sibling bonding. This would make an excellent book-club read, as it invites discussion.

I have very mixed feelings about the book. On the one hand I enjoyed reading it, it was well written and I found it an easy read, but the story and plot felt heavy, contrived and melodramatic and not at all satisfying. The end in some ways was a relief as the story had just accumulated too many niggles for me to care what happened to any of them in the end.

There is a feeling of distance from the characters, they seem two-dimensional, so that as a reader I couldn’t empathise with them. They all have their issues, which are perfectly understandable, although these are not explored in any depth, and there is so much that I struggled to comprehend: the significance of the house to them all, Elna’s abdication, Andrea’s detachment to everything but the house, Danny’s pointless studying, they just provoke so many unanswered questions. Maybe that is Ann Patchett’s aim, to provoke discussion. However, I read to be engaged in the writing and the story, not for discussion fodder, and from that perspective this fell short due to the story, but there are plenty of instances where her writing is lovely, the turn of phrase just perfect, which makes it delightful to read.

I am puzzled at what the author intended for the reader. I read Bel Canto some years ago and have a vague recollection of mixed feelings about it. Like this, the plot seemed half-baked, but the writing left a pleasant enough impression that I thought I would give this a go. I am still not sure what it is about her writing that I like if it isn’t the plots or the character portrayals.

This isn’t a book neatly bundled, it has many threads, most of which remain unexplored, they seem superfluous, distracting and messy, just like lives. ( )

The only reason I even finished this book is because I listened to Tom Hanks’ narration on an audiobook. Although the writing was excellent, the novel was so dull and tedious that I had to force myself to finish. ( )

This would be a great book club read. The characters are well-drawn and as a family drama, it offers several opportunities for taking sides and debating positions. The premise, though, is contrived and and the plot melodramatic. While it allows you to ponder a character's motivation, the author shouldn't have to step in and explain that motivation just to make certain you get it right. Still, a pleasant enough read. ( )

There are a few times in life when you leap up and the past that you'd been standing on falls away behind you, and the future you mean to land on is not yet in place, and for a moment you're suspended, knowing nothing and no one, not even yourself.
