When her parents announce their impending separation, Natalie cant understand why no one is fighting or at least mildly upset. And now that Zach and Lucy, her two best friends, have fallen in love, shes feeling slightly miffed and decidedly awkward. Where does she fit in now? And what has happened to the version of her life that played out like a TV show, with just the right amount of banter, pining and meaningful looks? Nothing is going according to plan. But then an unexpected romance comes along and shakes things up even further. This is a tender, funny and joyful novel about longing, confusion, feeling left out and finding out what really matters.… (més)

I thought the main character of this was well drawn, but I had trouble relating to her in a lot of ways. Other things were introvert universal: showing up at a party alone, weird insecurities that you can't shake, the rich internal fantasies that run through the teen mind, and intense and few relationships.

The thing that really holds me back is the often page long or more exposition. It interrupted the narrative flow, and wasn't usually necessary. Fewer meaningful integrated things on most every subject would've had more effect on me as a reader. ( )

this was an absolute joy to read because 1) the mc has pcos same as me and 2) everything written just perfectly encapsulates the awkwardness of teenage-hood in such a humorous and endearing way. ( )

This was a delightful read and I found myself chuckling all the way through it. I absolutely loved Natalie's narration! She was such an endearing character and she reminded me of myself at eighteen - shy, insecure, awkward around boys, uncomfortable with her body, an overthinker and uneasy in social situations. There will be many teenage girls who can relate to Natalie.

Witty, honest and heartwarming, "It Sounded Better in My Head" had wonderful characters, amusing dialogue and a perfectly paced romance. Also, the fact that the author is a past student at the school I work at, makes this book even more special. A fabulous debut from a talented writer. I am looking forward to following Nina's writing career. ( )
