If you enjoy enemies to lovers with a happily ever after plot this book definitely delivers. I really loved the group of suffragists that Annabelle befriends, as well as watching her wear down Sebastian is highly enjoyable. ( ![]() It began blandly but picked up within the first chapter or two. Something so enthralling in the way it made me feel- made me feel the intensity of the emotion, right along w/ the characters. Moreover, the writing was so enthralling, I literally couldn't put it down. I will definitely be on the lookout for more from this author in the future. In late 19th century England, Annabelle is part of the first class of women admitted to Oxford. At 25, she’s the poor daughter of a vicar and has few prospects, and the opening scene where she has to convince her uncle to allow her to go to school is priceless! (I’m reminded of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” where the man is the head of the household but the woman can turn the head any way she wants.) Once Annabelle gets to Oxford, she has to work for her scholarship by promoting women’s suffrage. There she encounters the cold, aristocratic Sebastian, a duke. Her supervisor is horrified to discover Annabelle and the duke got into an argument, but Annabelle points out that if they sway him to their cause, he will bring all the other men along. If they fail to get him, they are doomed. (I like Annabelle already.) Sebastian, on the other hand, is under social pressure from none other than the queen, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear at first. He’s been a bit of a recluse and is ordered to start throwing social engagements in addition to taking over a political campaign, which he is loath to do. I loved the chemistry between these two. Annabelle has secrets in her past that prevent her from ever wanting to get close to a man again. And Sebastian can’t help but be pulled to her. As she stays at his estate and they slowly grow closer but are forced to confront class differences, this was simply a delicious historical romance read. I’ll definitely be checking out book two in the series. Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader. I picked this up because the cover was cute, the premise was cute, and I'm a sucker for things set in Oxford. I only started reading romance last year, and there have only been a few I've liked. I keep giving them a try, thinking maybe I'll like the next one. Not this one. I really liked the protagonist - she was smart, funny, and snarky...until she met the guy. I enjoyed their banter to a degree, although he felt very much like the straight white guy in class playing devil's advocate because none of these issues affect him personally. Which is basically what he was. I'm having a hard time reviewing the book, probably because I didn't like it. I may come back to this. It wasn't a bad book by any means; it just wasn't for me. There are a few things I wish had been altered, Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

"With her sterling debut, Evie Dunmore dives into a fresh new space in historical romance that hits all the right notes."--Entertainment Weekly A stunning debut for author Evie Dunmore and her Oxford suffragists in which a fiercely independent vicar's daughter takes on a powerful duke in a fiery love story that threatens to upend the British social order. England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women's suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain's politics at the Queen's command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can't deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for. Sebastian is appalled to find a suffragist squad has infiltrated his ducal home, but the real threat is his impossible feelings for green-eyed beauty Annabelle. He is looking for a wife of equal standing to secure the legacy he has worked so hard to rebuild, not an outspoken commoner who could never be his duchess. But he wouldn't be the greatest strategist of the Kingdom if he couldn't claim this alluring bluestocking without the promise of a ring...or could he? Locked in a battle with rising passion and a will matching her own, Annabelle will learn just what it takes to topple a duke.... "There is nothing quite so satisfying as seeing such a man brought to his knees by a beautiful woman with nothing to her name except an inviolable sense of her own self-worth."--NPR No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
