Drawing on the experiences of Vietnam combat pilots and the new generation they taught, Robert Wilcox traces the rise of today's fighter pilots and the transformation of aerial warfare. Wilcox takes us into previously classified territory with an unprecedented look at the first shoot-down of enemy planes by US fighters since Vietnam, and follows the pilots as they grow, learn, and finally test themselves in the Gulf War. Wilcox tells the story of several fighter pilots from the late 1970s through the Gulf War. It conveys a sense of the personalities and culture of elite USAF and USN pilots while giving a flavor of what air combat is like. It brushes against tantalizing topics including the Constant Peg program (where the USAF flew MiGs in Nevada as aggressors) and the consequences of the Soviets developing and proliferating all-aspect missiles during the 1980s. Still, I was hoping for a more rigorous and detailed history. Wilcox inserts himself into the narrative a great deal, which didn't add anything to my enjoyment of the book. ( )
