This book is just so freaking fabulous! I don't know how I am going to wait an entire year to read the next one! This is the sequel to A Curse so Dark and Lonely which followed Rhen and his curse, but A Heart so Fierce and Broken follows Grey after the events in the first book and even though I gave the first book 5 stars, I think I liked this book even more! Can I give it 5.5 stars? Absolutely wonderful! Grey is now my book boyfriend 100%. Love him so much!!!

Love this series so much! Above is my review from 2020, if you want my fill review from 2021, check out my wrap up vlog. https://youtu.be/6_EFasi4gAE ( )

"Do you long for escape? Or shall I continue along this path?
Give the order and I will obey."

I really wanted to love this book as much as I did the first one, but I just couldn't get on board with the plot because of reasons.

My biggest complaint is the fact that Grey decided that keeping the heir's identity a secret would somehow lessen the discord and turmoil in the kingdom when it was very obvious that even a rumor of a different heir was enough to create tension.

Rhen was also painted in a bad light because he was reacting out of fear of magic (rightly so after what he had endured during the first book). And Grey was being suspicious and hiding a secret to somehow protect(???) Rhen and the kingdom.

If Grey would have just told Rhen who he was as soon as he knew, this ENTIRE conflict could have been avoided.

The only thing that saved this book for me was the romance (I'm a sucker for a cute love story). ( )

Book Two in this trilogy follows Grey as he leaves Rhen and Harper in order to give Emberfall a chance to be reunited with its king.

The first book, A Curse So Dark and Lonely, kept me enthralled the entire time. I like Grey, so I was excited to see his story. Books two and three put Rhen in the background, which I wasn't expecting. Grey is truly the link for the three novels. If you read book one, you know why Grey leaves. Lilith should be taken care of and Grey doesn't want to create problems for Rhen and his people. Unfortunately, the rumors start anyway. Is Rhen the true heir? Grey finds a place to live and a humble existence. He's good for now.

Meanwhile, other countries see Emberfall as vulnerable. Karis Luran's ruthlessness destroys any hope of Grey remaining invisible and Emberfall defending itself. Karis's daughters are close. One has been groomed to be the next Queen, so she has a ruthless streak as well. One can't stand violence used as the only form of negotiation. Lia Mara believes she can talk to Rhen and a peaceful solution will ensue. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned. It's at this point that Grey and Lia Mara meet.

I like both characters a lot. I missed Harper and Rhen that I met in book one. Yes, they maintain character, but I hoped that Rhen found himself and could lead. It was like they were pushed aside for this new story. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the new story and enjoyed the novel. I just felt a bit empty with my old friends from book one. I really liked the relationship between the sisters. Both her sister and her mother underestimate Lia Mara's abilities to analyze what path must be taken and the strength it takes to take risk and to hope for peace. Grey and Lia Mara complement each other really well and give hope that Emberfall may survive. ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.

I waited forever for this book, preordered and downloaded it to my kindle the same day it came out, and it still took me this long to actually read it lol. But it was certainly worth the wait. Now it looks like around a year wait till the conclusion. I don't know if my sanity hold on that long after that ending.

So after the first book, I was shipping Harper and Grey so hard, but after this book, I realized that I just love Grey and want him to be happy, also find I am hating Rhen. It started out as disappointment that turned into loathing and has moved up a notch to just hating. There wasn't much with Harper in this one, which felt weird since the first book was mostly focused on her. But I am loving the new character Lia Mara, I think I might like her even more than Harper, but it's hard to say for sure.

A note on a few of the more minor characters. Lia Mara's mother is a cold heart witch. How a mother can be like that to her daughter is beyond me. I didn't like Lia Mara's sister very much at first but she's not too bad. Tycho is so loyal and brave for such a young boy. I had so many issues with Jake at the beginning, but he has come out shining at the end. Noah is a quiet but reassuring presence in the group. Finally Iisak, I didn't know what to think at first, but I kinda like him but still think they should stay wary of him.

As I said before. I can't wait to read the next book, and while I would love to see how this story ends I'm also really hoping that there will be more. Mostly I just more Grey. I really love that man lol. 5 well earned stars from me.

How I choose my rating:
1* Hated it. I had to force myself to finish it.
2** Didn't like it. I didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other than for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this book's content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

teen fantasy fiction, character-driven romance/adventure - not sure whose heart the title refers to? Rhen, maybe, though this story followed mostly Grey and Lia Mara (daughter of Emberfalls' enemy Queen Karis Luran).

It'd been so long since I read the first one I didn't immediately connect with Grey's narrative, and I didn't find Lia Mara as appealing as the defiant, differently-abled Harper. At least not at first. But as Grey's character develops throughout the story, as we see his weaknesses and strengths, we also grow to like the overlooked, unfavored daughter Lia Mara who is as clever and tenacious as we could hope for. We also get to spend more time in the company of Jacob/Jake (Harper's brother who is still itching to go back home) and his partner Noah (making the best of his time in Emberfalls as a Healer), and meet the young stable-hand Tycho and a fearsome winged creature named Iisak (ICE-k).

This took me a while to get into, but by the end I was ready for the next installment--too bad it's not been written yet.

parental notes: contains violence (battle and torture) but no language, kissing but no sex. There is a little drinking. ( )
