At 25, Libby has inherited a large house that belonged to her biological parents, whom she doesn’t remember, as she’d been adopted at 10 months old when her parents and one other person had been found (suicide) in the home she has now inherited. An older brother and sister were never found. Now, Libby wants to find out exactly what happened in that house and what happened to her siblings.

The story is told from three different points of view, one of them narrating what happened 25 years ago before “the baby” (Libby) and the three dead people were found. It took me quite a while to figure out all the characters and although it wasn’t overtly mentioned how the characters were related until later in the story, I did eventually figure it out. That being said, to get there took wading through figuring out a bunch of other characters, too. I have to admit the first half of the story wasn’t nearly as interesting as the second half, likely because it took me so long to figure out all the characters. I would probably give the second half a bit higher rating than I’m rating it overall. ( )

This was an intriguing book, although it never quite came together as effectively as I hoped.

Flitting between the present day and twenty five years ago, it is essentially the story of the disintegration of a family, told through several alternating perspectives. On her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby receives a letter from a solicitor, advising her that she has inherited an immensely valuable property on London’s prestigious Cheyne Walk in Chelsea. This is not all that she learns, however. She also finds that there are several secrets in her family’s past, and that not all of them have yet been resolved.

I liked the sense of suspense that Jewell generates, although I found that the plot was just a little bit too convoluted for my taste. ( )

So many narrators telling little bits of the story, until the end of the book and all stories merge into one tragic tale. Libby receives a letter on her 25th birthday from English solicitors informing her that she is the owner of a house on Cheyne Walk, a prestigious address. Now begins Libby’s journey to claim the house and learn about her parents. Libby, an abandoned baby in the Cheyne Walk house grew up with adoptive parents. Lucy enters her depressing narrative about living on the streets of France with her two children and trying to get back to England and the Cheyne Walk house. But why? Henry jumps into the picture, explaining many areas of what has happened in the house on Cheyne Walk, but he is only a young boy when he begins his tale. So many red herrings in the story that the reader goes up and down the roller coaster afraid of what might happen next. A fun story. ( )

Creepy, scary and yet you can see it happening. When you see headlines about children being kept captive by their own parents, and you ask yourself "how could this happen? who would do this to their own children?"

This story is told from the pov of multiple narrators, traveling back and forth in time - and some of the narrators aren't always honest. As the characters are introduced it was a little confusing, but eventually a dark and chilling picture emerges. Multiple families living in a sort of cult/commune - and the children who bear the brunt of the adult's decisions.

Second book of hers I have read. Liked them both. She certainly has a pile of twisted stories to tell. ( )

They weren’t bad books,” Phin countered patiently. “They were books that you didn’t enjoy. It’s not the same thing at all. The only bad books are books that are so badly written that no one will publish them. Any book that has been published is going to be a ‘good book’ for someone.
the only way to really know what was going on in the world was to listen to women talk. Anyone who ignores the chatter of women is poorer by any measure.
