This is the life story of Victor Dalmau, having served as a medic in the Spanish Civil War, fleeing to France when all is lost, and then immigrating to Chile with his brother’s pregnant girlfriend. This should be quite exciting, but it’s told like a recitation of facts and the news (about the war and politics) in past tense. In a word, I found it dull. And hard to get through for that reason. Barely a pick for me. ( )

This is hands down my recommendation for those trying to get into Isabel Allende who aren't ready to conquer the masterpiece that is The House of the Spirits.In actuality, it's probably me that's biased, since an embarrassingly large portion of my degree was spent studying Spain around the time of Franco, and a significantly smaller portion was spent studying Central and South American literature. I find myself ranting on simply too many occasions about the way this part of history is generally ignored. At the same time, having spent so much time studying Francoist Spain, you will be hard pressed to force me to consume more about the time period. But I made an exception for Isabel, and I was so glad I did. This book has everything I look for in a good Allende: generational structure, complex characters (who don't all agree with each other politically or morally even when they are related) and the blurring between good and evil. Plus, this one isn't too long, which is why I believe it would be more palatable than some of Allende's more epic (and honestly much better) pieces. 10/10, probably would read again. ( )

En plena Guerra Civil española, el joven médico Víctor Dalmau, junto a su amiga pianista Roser Bruguera, se ven obligados a abandonar Barcelona, exiliarse y cruzar los Pirineos rumbo a Francia. A bordo del «Winnipeg», un navío fletado por el poeta Pablo Neruda que llevó a más de dos mil españoles rumbo a Valparaíso, embarcarán en busca de la paz y la libertad que no tuvieron en su país. Recibidos como héroes en Chile —ese «largo pétalo de mar y nieve», en palabras del poeta chileno—, se integrarán en la vida social del país durante varias décadas hasta el golpe de Estado que derrocó al doctor Salvador Allende, amigo de Victor por su común afición al ajedrez. Víctor y Roser se encontrarán nuevamente desarraigados, pero como dice la autora: «si uno vive lo suficiente, todos los círculos se cierran». Un viaje a través de la historia del siglo XX de la mano de unos personajes inolvidables que descubrirán que en una sola vida caben muchas vidas y que, a veces, lo difícil no es huir sino volver.

Die Geschichte um Roser und Victor spannt einen weiten historischen Bogen, vom Beginn des spanischen Bürgerkrieges, ihre Flucht nach Frankreich und Ankunft in Chile und die spätere Pinochet-Diktaktur bis zu deren Ende.

Beim Hören hatte ich die ganze Zeit das Gefühl, die Geschichte schon zu kennen. Die Protagonist:innen gibt es in anderen Romanen, die Geschehnisse schienen mir vorhersehbar, zum Ende hin werden jedoch plötzlich ohne mir ersichtlichen Grund neue Aspekte und Handlungsstränge eingeflochten und die Charaktere im Nachhinein noch einmal geschärft, oder auch verniedlicht. Ich konnte mich des Eindrucks nicht erwehren, dass der Roman am Ende für die Gunst des Lesepublikums noch künstlich aufgeplustert worden ist - seinen Abschluss hatte e m.E. schon an einem Meilenstein ein paar Kapitel früher.

Natürlich ist es richtig, die Greuel des spanischen Bürgerkrieges und der beiden Diktaturen auch in der Literatur immer wieder in Erinnerung zu bringen, und dass Isabel Allende nicht ausgewogen, differenziert und neutral zu dieser Geschichte steht und schreibt, ist ihr nicht vorzuwerfen. Mehr Sorgfalt bei der Entwicklung der Story hätte ich mir jedoch gewünscht.

Mich hat der Roman nicht erreicht, und die Lobgesänge kann ich nicht nachvollziehen. Vielleicht lag es auch an der Vorlesestimme von Wiebke Puls, die meinem Empfinden nach nicht so recht zur Geschichte gepasst hat, obwohl sie sehr angenehm liest. ( )
