"Sunny's just made it to middle school . . . and it's making her life very confusing. All her best friend Deb wants to talk about is fashion, boys, makeup, boys, and being cool. Sunny's not against any of these things, but she also doesn't understand why suddenly everything revolves around them. She's much more comfortable when she's in her basement, playing Dungeons & Dragons with a bunch of new friends. Because when you're swordfighting and spider-slaying, it's hard to worry about whether you look cool or not. Especially when it's your turn to roll the 20-sided die." -- Provided by publisher.… (més)

The first Sunny book was deep. It looked at her life while at grandpas in Florida and what led to her going there. It looked at troubles in a family from a side character and how it affected Sunny, without really affecting her. But now we are on book 3. It’s a year in her life. 7th grade, and it’s the late 70’s so everything should be groovy. Sunny learns about D&D and that it’s okay to not like all the same things your friends do as you grow up. Overall I like the book, and it is a quick read. But it’s not deep. It has heart, but it’s forgettable. ( )

The third book in the "Sunny" series starts off groovy, in Pennsylvania, September 1977.
Wonder Twin Powers, roller skating, comic book stores, and Dungeons and Dragons - straight out of my childhood! I had the Monster Manual and the figurines too! A lovely stroll down memory lane for me...

For Sunny, it's all about fitting in with friends during a difficult age. What's cool and what's interesting/fun are not always the same! "Trying hard to be cool can make you feel really uncool... and it's much more fun to have fun." Ahh... middle school...

As for me? I'm off to the garage to find my old 20 sided die! :-) ( )

I hadn't read the previous two Sunny novels, but I enjoyed this one, in which seventh-grader Sunny discovers D&D just as her friend Deb gets more interested in boys (but not playing D&D with them), earrings, and designer jeans. It's light and funny but very real, and I love the 1970s details.

"So, what should we dress up as for Halloween this year?"
"We're too old to trick-or-treat."
"Too old?" (imagines two old ladies at a door, one saying "Trick or treat!" and the other saying "Nothing chewy. We have dentures.")

Ah and the series continues on! This time Sunny faces the rules of being groovy or not in the middle school. She is torn between being cool with her girlfriends or being nerdy playing D&D with the boys. Which way will she turn? Once again, love the story and the illustrations. As a PA native, this series takes me back to when I grew up and I enjoy each and every one of these books! Great pic of the author at the end as well. :) ( )
