I bought this book for my middle school library since the 8th grade studies the Holocaust, and yes, even if the ending is a bit politicized, it remains relevant nonetheless. We, as a society, have gotten too complacent, and it's important to stand up for others who may not be able to speak out for themselves.

That said, my number one complaint is the binding on this book. The hardcover itself doesn't HAVE a cover for the spine: it's literally just cloth covering the individual pages. I anticipate that this copy won't last long with my middle-schoolers, which is a shame considering that the book is a steep $24.99. ( )

Julian (from Wonder) has a homework assignment, and asks his grandmother to tell a story. This book is her story of being a teenage Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France. Being separated from her parents when the Nazis came to her school, the hatred they fomented, and their vicious search for the Jewish children. She escapes, thanks to a boy classmate with polio, whom she has mostly ignored, and how his family hides her. It is a story of human kindness and bravery in a world gone mad. 4.5 stars, and one that most everyone would benefit from reading. ( )

If I could give White Bird more than five stars, I would. The artwork and book design are just dazzling, and the story, although written for children, wholly engrossed--and moved--this adult. The tie-in to things happening today felt organic, unforced, and appropriate. And finally, the information and personal stories that Palacio offers at the end are just perfect. Not too much, not too little, and of great usefulness to the child or adult who wants to learn more. White Bird goes a long way towards ensuring that a new generation will never forget the Holocaust and its lessons. ( )
