Eric Carle is known for his exquisite collage style art, which is one thing that I love about this book. The illustrations are vibrant and add to the story. The book tells about a father seahorse that is carrying eggs in its pouch. It then travels through the sea meeting many different male species of fish that are also caring for their young in one way or another. That introduces a variety of fish species to the students while also giving insight on how they care for their young. The book also utilizes repetition to help with the flow of the story. I really enjoy this book and would use it for its illustrations and the introduction of different aquatic species. After reading this story, I may have students try to make a collage style art work of their own. This is such a cute story that explains how the male seahorse carries the baby seahorse eggs in his pouch. It then details his little journey in meeting other male fish that were taking care of their eggs (along with how they did, whether they were being carried by mouth, resting in a nest, or carrying them on their head). I just loved the simplicity of this story as well as the educational element as it explains the biological occurrences in the ocean. Personally, I never knew how many male fish took care of their eggs as they developed. At the end of the story, the seahorse babies hatched from their eggs and went on to live their lives. When I get to this sentence I change it so that Mr Fish dad says 'I'm taking care of my children' or some such thing.
