2.5 stars, the "motherhood" theme just didn't work for me... ( )

A slow burner.
This book was beautifully written, but slow, so slow. So slow in fact, that most of my book group gave it 3 or 3.5 stars, which was very disappointing after Jessie Burton's previous two books.
I enjoyed this in the end and was glad that I finished it, but I missed the magical realism of The Miniaturist, my favourite of the author's three adult titles.

There was a further element that normally would have put me off reading; the relationship between Constance Holden and Elise Morceau. I generally shy away from lesbian books but this was fairly subtle and I managed to stick with it.

Again, this was written in a dual time frame. The modern characters are set in 2017, with Rose Simmons already in her thirties, but directionless and stuck in a stale relationship. She was raised by her father after her mother abandoned her a baby. Her father has told her very little about her mother and Rose is haunted by questions.
In 1980s London, Constance Holden and Elise Morceau meet when Elise's date fails to show. The relationship between the young Elise and older Constance is very much lead by Constance, who's book is being turned into a movie in Los Angles. Elise travels with her to America, but all is not glittering and perfect.

And so, with the scene set, we gradually follow Rose in her search for her mother, alongside the story of Constance and Elise in the bright lights and movie life of LA. Will Rose get the answers she so longs for?

The characters were well drawn and I felt as if I knew them well by the end. The denouement is also realistic. There were a few dodgy coincidences during the narrative that were less convincing and I would have enjoyed a bit more interest to move the story along a bit faster. All in all, I still think The Miniaturist is hard to beat.

A quick mention for the narrator, Hayley Atwell, who did a brilliant job and I'd give her 5 stars for her contribution. ( )

Liked this book. I got this as a gift, it is not a book I'd normally choose myself, but I've enjoyed reading it.
The first chapters I absolutely needed to get into the story, to get used to the style of writing and get myself acquainted with the scenery, characters etc.

The way Rose's story was told was intriguing. The parallel with her mother's situation, circling around Connie, telling the stories of both their lives. Mother and daughter differ, they make different decisions.
The end of the book is (as far as I can tell) an open ending. In relation to the book itself, I didn't like that. Lots of things were touched, explained. I'm not searching for an 'all's well that ends well'-ending, but a bit more elaboration there would have made the book even better, imho. ( )

I'm beginning to think Jessie Burton's excellent debut novel [b:The Miniaturist|18498569|The Miniaturist|Jessie Burton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1392415313l/18498569._SY75_.jpg|25328659] was a fluke. Its follow-up, [b:The Muse|27213208|The Muse|Jessie Burton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1457475767l/27213208._SY75_.jpg|46931069], was labored and unwieldy, but taking a misstep after such a strong initial success is hardly unusual. After seeing the reviews for The Confession, I was heartened to think Burton was back on track.

I was wrong. The Confession is flimsy stuff, full of absurd coincidences and unsophisticated prose that belonged to romance fiction rather than a serious novel. What is more, I detested the characters: the too-beautiful-and-fragile Elise, the ice queen Constance, and the insipid Rose (Elise's daughter). Rose, in particular, is dull and so unlikable that you just want to scream at the page whenever she starts whining about her loser boyfriend or missing mother.

Probably this will be the last Burton I read. I would still recommend The Miniaturist, but my sense is that novel was a one-off piece of magic that she is incapable of replicating. ( )

Rose ist ohne Mutter aufgewachsen, als Kind phantasierte sie sich alle möglichen Szenarien zusammen, wo die sein könnte und weshalb sie ihre Tochter einfach verlassen hat. Auch ihr Vater erzählt nicht über die Zeit Anfang der 80er Jahre, wie es dazu kam, dass die Dinge so gelaufen sind. 34 Jahre später jedoch gibt er Rose zwei Bücher von Constance Holden mit der Info, dass diese ihre Mutter gekannt hatte und die letzte war, die Elise gesehen hat, bevor sie verschwand. Rose merkt schnell, dass es nicht einfach ist an die Autorin heranzukommen, durch einen Trick schleicht sie sich als Assistentin in das Leben der älteren Dame, die nach drei Jahrzehnten zum ersten Mal wieder schreibt. Vielleicht findet sie in diesem neuen Roman Antworten auf die vielen Fragen, die sie sich ihr Leben lang schon gestellt hat.

Jessie Burtons Geschichte schildert nicht nur die Suche nach den unbekannten Wurzeln, sondern auch die Suche nach sich selbst und der Frage, wer man eigentlich ist. Rose ist ganz typisch für ihre Generation, die zwar erwachsen ist und einen Studienabschluss hat, aber auch jenseits der 30 noch suchend durch das eigene Leben irrt und nicht weiß, was sie eigentlich von diesem erwartet: eine Beziehung, ein Kind, berufliche Erfüllung? Alles befindet sich in einem fragilen Zustand, weshalb sie sich umso mehr an die Vergangenheit klammert und hofft, durch das Finden ihrer Mutter auch die Antworten zu bekommen, die sie selbst nicht zu geben vermag.

Auf zwei Zeitebenen erleben wir einerseits die Gegenwart Roses und ihre Annäherung an Constance. Je enger die Verbindung zu der Autorin wird, desto weiter entfernt sie sich jedoch auch von ihrem Freund. Was vorher feine Risse in der Beziehung waren, werden plötzlich unüberwindbare Gräben. Der neue Roman scheint biografische Elemente zu enthalten, doch so richtig bringt auch er Rose in ihrer Suche nicht weiter und offen kann sie Constance nicht mit ihren Anliegen konfrontieren, immerhin hat sie sich unter falscher Identität in ihr Haus eingeschlichen. Ebenso wie viele Jahre später ihre Tochter ist auch die junge Elise ist von der Schriftstellerin fasziniert und bereit, alles für diese aufzugeben. Doch das Ungleichgewicht in ihrer Beziehung wird in der Ferne nicht durch die neuen Erfahrungen kompensiert, sondern nur noch offenkundiger und führt unweigerlich in die Katastrophe.

Erzählerisch überzeugt Jessie Burton, beide Handlungsstränge sind sauber gearbeitet und können jeder für sich durchaus begeistern. Allerdings ist bei mir der Funken nicht ganz übergesprungen. Die Faszination, die Constance Holden auf die beiden Frauen ausübt, hat sich mir nicht im gleichen Maße offenbart. Ich fand sie als jüngere und noch mehr als ältere Frau kalt und abweisend, eigentlich kein Mensch, der andere für sich gewinnt, denn an Zuneigung bietet sie wenig und Interesse scheint sie nur für sich selbst zu haben. Elise verfällt ihr als unbedarftes Mädchen, Rose ist eigentlich schon viel weiter im Leben, macht aber eher den Eindruck einer vielleicht 20-Jährigen, die noch keine Vorstellung davon hat, wo ihre Reise hingehen soll. Zwar hat Rose für sich am Ende den Eindruck deutlich weitergekommen zu sein, ich empfinde sie jedoch ähnlich planlos wie zu Beginn und kann nicht wirklich eine Entwicklung erkennen. Für diese Rückkehr zum Ausgangspunkt waren leider ein paar Schleifen zu viel erforderlich, die Geschichte hätte stringenter erzählt werden dürfen. ( )
